This position is part of the ESSCA Group support to the NASA EM22 Materials Test, Chemistry & Contamination Control Branch.
Responsibilities:
This a Subject Matter Expert (SME) level Pressure System position. The position will function as the lead over Pressure System for the Hydrogen Test Facility.
Responsibilities include:

  • The liaison/representative for the Hydrogen Test Facility to the Pressure Systems Manager at MSFC.
  • Pressure System lead for HTF/EM22 on engineering decisions.
  • Serve as approval/signature for drawings and OWi's used at HTF for the high-pressure gaseous hydrogen and liquid hydrogen system.
  • Provide material selection guidance for hydrogen embrittlement issues.
  • Provide guidance on component selection for high Pressure System and liquid hydrogen system.
  • Evaluate configuration change plans for compliance to NASA and MSFC requirements.
  • Assist in the development of design of new equipment install. This equipment include will liquid hydrogen storage tank, transfer lines, high pressure gaseous hydrogen compressor and associated equipment.
  • Work with prime contractors on installation of new equipment.
  • Provide written and oral presentations on Pressure System status for the HTF.

The selected candidate will work integrally with ESSCA Group and customer engineers as needed supporting the HTF liquid hydrogen and high-Pressure System to maintain certification of each system.
Qualifications:
A degree in Materials, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering or related Engineering field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Focus on fluid transfer systems is preferred. Educational requirements are typically the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum of 24 years of experience, a Masters with at least 28 years of experience, or a BS with at least 30 years of experience.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the management of Pressure Systems specifically related to MSFC requirements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the installation requirements of bulk liquid hydrogen storage and other cryogen media specifically to MSFC requirements.
  • A subject matter expert in NASA Pressure System and vessel design, installation, and operation.
  • Experience serving as authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) over MSFC Pressure System and vessel design, installation, and operation.
  • Experience with interpret National Consensus Standards and their application to MSFC/MAF Pressure Systems and vessels (ASME pressure vessel and piping codes, Compressed Gas Association (CGA), American Petroleum Institute (API), etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully communicate and coordinate with a wide variety of personnel and technical disciplines.

Desired Skills and Experience:
  • Proficient in providing oversight for Cryogen and high-Pressure Systems.
  • Proficient in evaluating materials selection on components for compliance to NASA and MSFC requirements.
  • Experience with installation of liquid hydrogen and other cryogen tanks and associated components.
  • Experience in the design, development, and testing of NASA Pressure Systems.

Essential Functions
Work Environment:
Office and laboratory environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (40%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
