Brief Description of Duties
 

The University of the District of Columbia is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on our federally funded grant project. Our project focuses on conducting exciting research, education, and outreach activities. This position provides opportunities to work on high impact research and education with students and faculty while creating a strong and long-term societal impact. The Postdoctoral Research position is for one year but can be renewed for multiple years contingent upon availability of funds and performance.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institutes on Aging (NIA) MSTEM grant, under the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at the University of the District of Columbia is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate. The NIH NIA MSTEM grant focuses on the creation and implementation of an array of invaluable aging-focused student and faculty activities tied to research, curricular enhancements, and experiential learning at UDC.  This project synergizes with on-going activities at UDC: 1) sponsored research projects tied to investigating balance and gait in aging individuals, human performance and others; 2) the Center for Biomechanical & Rehabilitation Engineering (CBRE); 3) the immergence of a new multi-laboratory biomedical research facility, the NIH-sponsored Specialized Technological center for Assistive Rehabilitation (STAR) research (an upcoming state-of-the-art center focusing on gait & balance, virtual reality rehabilitation, assistive robotics for rehabilitation, biomechanics, and bioimaging) which will facilitate research on a wide-range of aging, impaired and unimpaired populations; and 4) the further enhancement of the UDC Biomedical Engineering (BME) program, the only ABET-accredited bachelor of science in BME program at a HBCU nationwide. 

The postdoctoral associate work with the principal investigator, students and personnel of the NIH NIA MSTEM project.  Further, the Research Associate will produce publications and gain experience mentoring students.  Towards their career advancement, they will be encouraged to apply to grants, and attend meetings and workshops, as well as trainings.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Heavily involved with student and project personnel research
  • Mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research assistants
  • Proactivity towards research paper publications
  • Scoping and orchestrating new research projects and contributing to on-going research projects
  • Facilitating equipment training and utilization
  • Organizing activities, meetings, internal and external events in coordination with the principal investigator
  • Facilitating communications and organizing research meetings
  • Facilitating grant progress reports in coordination with the principal investigator
  • Submitting grant applications

Minimum Job Requirements

Applicants are expected to have:

  • A Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Rehabilitation Engineering or another related field (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics) by time of appointment
  • Ability to work with the research team which includes undergraduate and graduate students
  • Knowledge of human subject research
  • Motivation and self-direction
  • Exemplary problem-solving, as well as written and oral communication skills
  • Eligibility to work legally in the United States
  • A track record of scholarly research
