Summary
The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) at the University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a Postdoctoral Fellow position. The successful candidate will play a key role in our dynamic research team and contribute to developing cutting edge tools for environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis for monitoring invasive species and toxin-producing cyanobacteria species in the Great Lakes. The project objectives include development of eDNA-based high throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR) assays and metabarcoding assays for conservation and management of species of interest in the Great Lakes.
The successful candidate will work closely with Dr.Subba Rao Chaganti from the University of Michigan and collaborators from the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab and the United States Geological Survey.
Term Appointment: This is a one year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on performance.

Your appointment will be with CIGLR, which is part of the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. CIGLR is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and NOAA that brings together experts from academia and government research labs to work on pressing problems facing the Great Lakes region. You will spend the majority of their time at NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) in Ann Arbor and will collaborate closely with colleagues at CIGLR, GLERL, SEAS and other Great Lakes partners.

Responsibilities*
The successful candidate will develop HT-qPCR and metabarcoding assays for the targeted species of interest, including potential invasive species to the Great Lakes, and genes responsible for cyanotoxins. The majority of the Postdoctoral Fellow's work will focus on the validation of eDNA assays, processing genomic data, conducting statistical analyses, troubleshooting, and contributing to project reports. The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to lead at least one manuscript based on research findings for submission to a peer-reviewed journal and present results at a conference(s). A manuscript is expected to be initiated within 6 months of the start date. The candidate will have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork, including the use of advanced autosamplers.
Required Qualifications*
  • Doctoral degree in microbiology, Molecular Ecology, biological oceanography, or a related field. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
  • Fluency in molecular biology techniques and developing assays for species of interest.
  • Experience in high-throughput sequencing platforms and metabarcoding data analysis.
  • Proficiency in bioinformatics processes and statistical analyses.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to work in a dynamic team environment.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficient in data visualization and interpretation.
  • This position is open only to US Citizens or permanent residents due to federal security clearance required for access to NOAA GLERL facilities and resources.

Additional Information
Salary will be determined based on experience.
Remote and flexible work agreements may be made to support partial off-site work at a remote location.
