Summary
The School for Environment and Sustainability seeks applicants for a postdoctoral research position focusing on creation of a Climate Smart verification system for sustainable agricultural practices, using a life cycle assessment framework. You will compile available data on changes in greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration associated with improved agricultural practices, work with partners to collect and verify data from farming operations, and collaboratively create and refine a robust tool to verify GHG savings associated with sustainable agricultural management.
You will interface with a collaborative team of researchers within the university, governmental partners, and NGOs who are working together on the Michigan Climate Smart Farm Project, which seeks to accurately measure and verify ecosystem services associated with Climate Smart agricultural practices.
The School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan has a vibrant research community of individuals engaged in interdisciplinary research to support the sustainable design, assessment, and management of society's systems. Researchers within SEAS foster a unique and collegial environment, with natural scientists, social scientists, engineers, and designers working collaboratively in an integrative setting.
Note: This position will be a one year term-limited appointment with the possibility of renewal.

Required Qualifications*
  • PhD in engineering, sustainable agriculture, or related field
  • Research experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCAs)
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a research team
  • Demonstrated excellence in research communication

Desired Qualifications*
  • Knowledge of agricultural systems and practices or carbon cycles in ecosystems
  • Prior experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or development of tools for decision-making by interested parties

Additional Information
This is a residential position that requires in-person engagement with external interested parties and the research team. Remote and flexible work agreements may be made to support partial off-site work. This position will involve traveling to agricultural activity sites to engage with interested parties.
