Postdoctoral Position, Center for Religion and the Human
The Center for Religion and the Human ( CRH) and the Department of Religious Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, invite applications for a full-time appointment as a Postdoctoral Scholar. The Center is seeking a scholar who can contribute in particular to the Teaching Religion in Public (TRiP) Initiative. The incumbent will pursue their own research- as demonstrated by presentations and published work-and participate fully in TRiP programming, planning, and activities as well as related CRH events. Specific duties will include working collaboratively with the TRiP director to select and mentor five annual Engaging Religion projects, funded by small fellowships to current IUB graduate students; to curate the Engaging Religion Teaching Portal; to develop an undergraduate TRiP laboratory; and to raise TRiP's profile and range of participants by facilitating relationships initiatives and units on and off campus, including the College of Arts and Sciences ASURE program, the Center for Rural Engagement, and theCenter for Innovative Teaching and Learning. In 2025-2026, the Incumbent will also serve, together with a faculty member, as co-coordinator of a one-credit Teaching Practicum course in IUB's Department of Religious Studies. Pending departmental approval, the candidate may also have the opportunity to teach a course of their own design.
The appointment is for two years, with an annual salary of $56,000 plus benefits. The start date is August 1, 2024 with an end date of July 31, 2026.
We invite applications from qualified candidates who are at the beginning of their academic careers but who do not yet hold a tenure-track academic position. A Ph.D. is required.
Candidates who do not hold a Ph.D. but expect to by July 31, 2024, must provide a letter from the chair of their dissertation committee, confirming the proposed timeline for completion.
Applicants need not be scholars of religious studies. Rather, we encourage applications from scholars in a variety of fields whose work engages religion or theology not as authoritative systems, but as modes of inquiry inspired by an awareness of human and natural limits.
