Job description

Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

Opening for a postDoctoral Fellowship position co-mentored by two faculty to study the role of a signaling pathway in the development of cardiomyopathy. The project is funded by NIH and is based on discovery published in Nature Communications in 2020 that the PIX signaling pathway is required for assembly of integrin adhesion sites in the muscle of C. elegans. This was followed up by generating a heart-specific knockout of one PIX pathway component in mice. These mice develop dilated cardiomyopathy. Your job will be to characterize these mice and gain insight into how the cardiomyopathy develops. You can also receive training in C. elegans muscle biology studying the same pathway. Opportunity to take some aspects of this project to your own lab in the future.

You are expected to design, conduct, and evaluate research on this topic while receiving advanced training from two Principal Investigators, one an expert in C. elegans muscle biology, the other an expert in mouse heart cell biology and physiology.  You will be encouraged to further develop your research independence and professional skills. These skills include writing scientific papers, giving talks at national meetings and applying for fellowship and eventual grant applications. You will also have the opportunity to mentor the research of undergraduates and graduate students, and if interested give one or more lectures in a course designed for undergraduates or graduate students. The initial appointment is for one year, and renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years.

Interested candidates should apply online and submit a C.V., 3 reference letters, concise cover letter discussing interest in lab’s research and relevant qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Genetics or Biochemistry or related field with one or more first-author peer-reviewed papers. Experience with mice or C. elegans, molecular biology techniques, and microscopy is a plus but not required. Strong communication and writing skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
