Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The PACU Nurse is a Registered Nurse who assumes critical care responsibility for patients who have had any level of anesthesia. Teaches and supervises non-professional personnel as well as maintains the unit’s functional ability. Coordinates total nursing care for patients provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary nursing and other patient team personnel in maintaining standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting.

QUALIFICATIONS
Current California R.N. license and BLS C in the State of California. One year’s experience in recovery room or other related area such as intensive care, sub-acute intensive care or coronary care. ACLS required and CCRN preferred.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Job Specific Accountabilities
- Attends and administers critical care responsibilities to the patient recovering from anesthesia; closely observes for post-operative anesthesia complications (shock, hemorrhage, etc.).
- Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the department.
- Reports pertinent observations and reactions the patient’s condition to appropriate person (surgeons, anesthesiologist, Manager of Surgical Services) and records those observations accurately and concisely, and maintains continual communication.
- Identifies advanced arrhythmias and complications.
- Documents administration of medication, observation, charting and reporting effects of drugs, and effectively implements and counter signs all physicians orders.
- Assists the anesthesiologist with special procedures such as intubation, ventilators, arterial line and insertion, etc., as needed.
- Assists in the O.R., O.P.D. and ECT room as assigned.
- Participates in maintenance of clean, safe environment.
- Maintains the dignity and confidentiality of patients and serves as a patient advocate.
- Assists with emergency measures for sudden adverse developments, and acts calm and quietly.
- Participates in economical utilization of supplies and ensures that equipment is clean and safe.
- Demonstrates the ability to implement and utilize the nursing process when providing care.
- Performs a complete physical-psychosocial assessment of each patient and plans accordingly. Provides quality care based on the needs of the patient and family. Accurately perceives complications and patient’s perception of illness through these assessment skills.
- Orients patient and family to room, unit and any expected procedures. Involves patient/family directly in any patient teaching necessary for post-op recovery or safe care at home. Utilizes patient, family medical records or any other available source to gain maximum information on any new patient.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and rational for safe use of equipment, reports any equipment malfunctions and orders services as necessary.
- Regularly shares clinical expertise with nursing staff members in both formal and informal teaching situations.
- Reports problems to the Manager and consults physician as necessary, always asks questions to clarify situations and allows misunderstanding.
- As the coordinator of care, the Registered Nurse shall be responsible for the observation and direction of patient lifts and mobilization, and shall participate as needed in patient handling in accordance with the nurse’s job description and professional judgment.
