Job Title: Port Assistant (full-time)
Reports to: Port Coordinator
Location: El Paso, Texas
Terms: 4 (10 hour days)
Overtime may be available (through staffing agency)
Rate: $15 an hour
Schedule: Flexibility required

About the Role: Port Assistants cooperate with a team in the operations of BSC’s Port of Entry (POE) program, the Las Cruces Campus Dispatcher, and reports to the Port of Entry Coordinator on duty. The role is predominantly interpersonal with CPB1 asylum seekers and BSC team members within the scope of daily operations.
Responsibilities: Relevant operations include, but may not be limited to:
- Greet and escort CBP1 asylum seekers from the Port of Entry to our POE office space close to the port.
- Orient new arrivals to our waiting area with a welcome speech detailing who we are, services that we can and cannot provide, as well as the rules.
- Hand out water, meals, and material goods to new arrivals.
- Input guest’s immigration paperwork into the BSC database.
- Assist guests with information about paperwork and travel options
- Facilitate and assist with communication between guests and their sponsors.
- Site Stewardship
- Maintain a safe and sanitary space for guests and staff.
- Comply with safe food handling practices.
- Complete opening and closing procedures; Cleaning and restocking check lists, including but not limited to: scrub toilets, fridges, and floors.
- Candidate Requirements:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience: Minimum three (3) years of full-time work experience
- Conversationally fluent in Spanish and English, required
- Comfort speaking to and directing small crowds.
- Comfort navigating in-depth conversations via google translate with guests from all over the world.
- Highly proficient in de-escalating tense interpersonal interactions.
- Ability to take direction.
- Proficient computer skills (familiarity with Google-based systems preferred)
- Demonstrated skill at prompt and professional verbal and written communication
- Skilled at working in a team-oriented collaborative environment
- Strong initiative
- Flexible; ability to adjust to changing circumstances
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to demonstrate gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory behavior attitudes
- Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background and financial check
- Current driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Ability to pass a food handler’s exam (course and exam provided by BSC)
