Job description

Reedsburg Area Medical Center is recruiting a Per DiemPolysomnographic Technologist to join our team!


Schedule: 7 p.m. - 7 a.m.
Hours per week: as needed

Position Summary:

A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the clinical director to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. The technologist will be able to perform 16 channel polysomnography and associated patient care and education. This includes, but is not limited to: applying electrodes and sensors, calibrations of equipment, ensuring quality data collection and diagnostic procedures. The technologist must also provide accurate scoring, and documentation and implement a variety of PAP therapies. A Polysomnographic Technologist can perform the duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision of other staff.


Job Relationships:

Reports to Clinic Services Administrator and Clinic Nurse Manager.


Primary Customer Served:

Adolescent (13 - 18 years)

Adult (19 - 65 years)

Geriatric (> 66 years)


Education and Training Required:

  • Successful completion of a polysomnography program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in polysomnography "or"
  • Successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency at all competencies required of a Polysomnographic Technician "and"
  • Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or equivalent.
  • BLS certified.

Physical Requirements:

Physical Demands:

  • Occasionally stand - must be able to access computer hardware and video equipment located 3-6 feet from ground level.
  • Occasionally walk between the control area and patient room(s); must be able to move from control room to patient room quickly in cases of emergency.
  • Frequently sit to observe sleeping patients.
  • Frequently lift 10 pounds or less for records and/or supplies.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push and/or pull up to 25 pounds while assisting patients to the restroom, and retrieve or reposition equipment.
  • Occasionally climb stairs between admission/ER to Sleep Medicine.
  • Occasionally balance and be able to reach over patient to attach and adjust monitoring equipment.
  • Occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, and be able to bend at the waist and knees to adjust recording equipment and to assists patients from chairs or beds; good range of motion to allow visualization of various physiological monitors. Bending of the body downward and forward is required to install patient monitoring sensors and to make various adjustments to equipment and sensors.
  • Occasionally reach and handle/extend hands and arms to adjust audiovisual equipment and physiological monitors. Must be able to grasp and place equipment, rotate adjustment knobs and manipulate small objects.


Sight:

  • Continuously be able to observe several monitors, watch patients sleeping on video, monitor tracings on computer and make appropriate notations throughout the polysomnogram.


Cognition/Communication:

  • Frequent use of simple math, reading and writing skills (able to write reports and letters to doctors and/or patients).
  • Ability to measure accurately and appropriately for electrodes and sensors.
  • Occasional complex reading required (continued education and training).


Environmental Conditions:

  • Continuously works indoors in a well-lit and environmentally controlled environment.


Potential Hazards:

  • Occasionally works with chemical solutions, which may cause skin irritation; works with patients and staff that could have potentially contagious diseases(category I Blood and Body Fluid Exposure).
  • May handle hazardous drugs.


Psychological, Situational, Functional Factors:

  • Frequently must be able to use good judgment, evaluate and troubleshoot problematic situations, good communication and interpersonal skills to assist patients and co-workers in varied situations.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must provide care according to policy and procedures as well as AASM guidelines.
