JOB TITLE: POLICE OFFICER – LATERAL HIRE

DEPARTMENT: POLICE

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: SERGEANT

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: NONE

STATUS: FULL-TIME, NON-EXEMPT, BARGAINING UNIT

PAY RANGE: $61,297.00 to $91,000.00 base wage for 2024


Under general supervision, a Police Officer is responsible for serving and protecting the community by performing crime prevention, criminal investigations, and law enforcement activities; performs related duties as required.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responds to service calls. Assesses information attained through dispatch, training, and experience to determine the type of situation and response needed; drives at appropriate speeds to safely arrive on scene.
  • Patrols assigned areas.
  • Complies with uniform standards and ensures all equipment is operational and ready for duty.
  • Observes and maintains safety and security of property and citizens.
  • Enforces traffic laws.
  • Conducts investigations of accidents, crimes and complaints.
  • Cites and/or arrests law violators.
  • Intervenes in disputes by actively listening to involved parties, maintaining visual contact with disputants, and asking relevant questions to determine the most appropriate strategy to protect the public and mediate disputes.
  • Prepares and reviews reports and forms.
  • Serves warrants and aids citizens as required.
  • Responds to disasters as a first responder; manages evacuations, controls traffic in disaster areas, and uses protective equipment where hazardous materials may be present.
  • Continuously learns, reviews, and stays up-to-date on current division policies, trainings, and procedures; maintains first aid, firearms, and other required certifications.
  • Appears in court as a testifying officer, serves subpoenas, and assists in the enforcement of court orders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • High School diploma or general education degree (GED), and must have at least one year experience as a full-time Police Officer in the State of Ohio with no more than one year of separation of employment.
  • Successful completion of Law Enforcement Officer Training Program as prescribed by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) and maintain OPOTA certification.
  • Must successfully complete training required by the department.
  • Must meet the requirements established by the Twinsburg City Charter, Civil Service Commission and the Ohio Revised Code. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Must meet annual qualification standards for firearm use and possession.
  • Must have and maintain current certifications in First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to read, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write clear and accurate routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to take proper law enforcement actions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and behaviors and correct them in a positive and appropriate manner. Ability to understand and follow oral directions; ability to explain and defend reasoning, conclusions, and actions; ability to operate and provide ordinary care of motor vehicles and firearms; ability to meet current standards established by OPOTC; ability to obtain and maintain LEADS access; ability to accept individuals of diverse cultures; ability to deal effectively and equitably with persons of a different race, cultural background, or gender; ability to subdue person(s) resisting arrest; ability to pursue fleeing suspect(s); ability to run while wearing a duty belt and bulletproof vest; ability to drag or pull person(s); ability to climb up and over objects; ability to assess emergency needs; ability to diffuse situations; ability to recognize underlying problems; ability to recognize sounds and understand their significance; ability to visually recognize persons and their activities; ability to remain focused despite distractions; ability to multi-task; ability to maintain a professional demeanor in volatile, highly emotional, and high duress situations.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Must be able to operate and ride in emergency vehicles using lights and sirens.
  • Must be a Citizen of the United States.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. The employee’s vision must be correctable to 20/20. The employee is occasionally required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste and smell. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.

The employee will be exposed to bright, flashing lights and loud sirens.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
