PURPOSE STATEMENT
Under the supervision of the Director of Laboratory, the Point of Care Coordinator (POCC) oversees and maintains Point of Care Testing (waived testing) performed throughout the hospital and all waived and moderate testing performed at the hospital-owned clinics. This includes; but is not limited to, the review of quality control with corrective action, procedure development/ review, instrumentation assessment/ maintenance, user training/mentoring, computer data entry, and research of test methodologies. Helps the Laboratory Director with laboratory billing, including insurance denials, and reconciliation of send out testing. This position will be responsible for the training and competency maintenance throughout the organization in regard to Point of Care Testing. Additional duties may be assigned as needed, based on licensure, certification, and qualifications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Support the hospitals Mission and Vision values of Western Missouri Medical Center.
- Provide technical, scientific, and management oversight for Point of Care Testing (POCT) performed throughout the hospital system to meet/ exceed accreditation standards. This includes establishing test system performance characteristics, ensuring all areas are performing the testing accurately and according to guidelines, reviewing/ evaluating QC sheets, resolving technical problems and ensuring that remedial/ corrective actions are taken.
- Ensure that the test systems are properly functioning. Maintains, troubleshoots and takes corrective action with equipment as needed.
- Accurately performs testing in all assigned departments.
- Work with nursing, physicians, employees, and management as needed to ensure POCT is run efficiently and effectively.
- Communicate, liaison, instruct and dialog appropriately with health care providers, patients, and vendors on POCT issues such as test interpretation, recommendations for alternate testing, instrumentation, and problems with specimens/ methodology.
- Maintain and monitor comprehensive quality control, quality assurance and as needed, proficiency testing programs.
- Reviews and completes QA reports and takes corrective action with the appropriate department. Chair PI teams as needed and works with management to resolve issues and improve processes.
- Orient and train POCT personnel ensuring ongoing competency.
- Have a good understanding of Laboratory CPT Test codes so as to assist the Laboratory Director with laboratory billing, including insurance denials and reconciliation of send out testing.
- Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Take ownership of the Point of Care department. This is to include but not limited to:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Registered MLT/MLS with appropriate credentials from ASCP, AMT, ASMT or evidence of equivalent education, experience, and proficiency or Registered Nurse with either a bachelor’s or Associate degree in Nursing with a minimum of one year of experience in POC testing.
- Ability to operate and interpret results from the available laboratory instrumentation.
- Ability to relate medical knowledge to test situations.
- Ability to communicate well with patients, medical staff, peers and all customers.
- Must be able to assess patients throughout all stages of life from newborn to 105+ years of age regarding physical and psychological needs and limitations.
- Able to read, interpret and adhere to the laboratory's established policies and procedures concerning all areas of the laboratory.
- Working knowledge of computer use to include accurate data entry, HealthStream learning assignments, and both Hospital and Lab information systems.
- Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
- Ability to drive between the hospital and the clinics to provide support and review documentation.
- Ability to assess, change, and interpret laboratory CPT test codes.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to sit and stand, intermittent 8 to 10 hours a day.
- Must be able to use standard office equipment, including the telephone and computer keyboard.
- Continuously works under pressure of near 100% accuracy while meeting inflexible deadlines.
- Continuously utilizes manual/bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
- Frequently stands, walks, sits and utilizes eye/hand coordination and color definition.
- Occasionally reaches above shoulder, regularly required to life and/or carry up to 40 lbs.
- Occasionally walks on uneven surfaces.
- Regular exposure to disease-carrying specimens, hazardous chemicals, electromechanical hazards, stressful workloads, deadlines to meet and interruptions to the routine.
- May rotate shifts on a 24 hour, 7 days a week schedule in order to accomplish the goals of the Medical Center for quality patient care.
- Requires good manual dexterity and visual acuity (color-blindness must be noted).
- Must have good mobility in order to move about equipment and to be able to lift and move moderate weights.
- May be required to sit or stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to maintain concentration.
