Wake Up Asheville!: Podcast Production Internship
Internship Overview:
Position: Podcast Asheville Intern
Location: Remote, though living in or near Asheville strongly preferred.
Duration: Flexible, with a minimum commitment of 3 months
Compensation: $30 per produced episode
Description
The Overlook with Matt Peiken is an established, hyperlocal podcast about the news, arts, issues and trends of Asheville, NC. Its parent company, Podcast Asheville, is soon launching Wake Up, Asheville!, a brief, radio-styled newscast distributed as a podcast every midweek morning. NOTE: If you don't live in Western North Carolina, please include a letter as to why you are well-positioned to produce a podcast about Asheville.
We will train and then schedule up to three interns to individually self-produce a local news podcast. You will aggregate and rewrite copy from other local news outlets into a tight newscast running three to four minutes. You will voice, record and edit the newscast and upload it to a podcast hosting company.
Interns on a rotating schedule will each be responsible for self-producing anywhere from one to three episodes per week, with the work occuring evenings (Sunday through Thursday) for scheduled posting the following morning. We anticipate each episode to take between two to three hours to complete, and the pay is $30 for every approved episode.
This is an ideal opportunity to generate real-world working experience and a portfolio directly applicable to working in a professional newsroom. Successful interns may have the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities and train new interns as the podcast expands into neighboring markets.
Responsibilities:
- Research and compile relevant local news stories, events, and updates for daily inclusion in the podcast.
- Develop concise and engaging scripts for daily episodes (Mon-Fri), ensuring accuracy and adherence to journalistic standards.
- Record and provide a clear, clean, articulate voice for each episode, conveying information with professionalism and enthusiasm.
- Edit audio content to produce polished and high-quality episodes, incorporating provided music and sound bites where appropriate.
- Collaborate with the intern team on a rotating schedule (Sun-Thurs evening work) to ensure consistent and timely delivery of episodes. Each episode is expected to take approximately 2-3 hours to produce.
Qualifications:
- Strong interest in journalism, podcasting or related fields.
- Excellent research and writing skills.
- Clear and confident voice suitable for podcasting/broadcasting.
- Basic audio editing skills.
- Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
- Reside in or near Asheville to stay versed about local news.
How to Apply:
Please send a cover letter detailing your career interests and general availability this spring and summer. Please also contact Matt with any questions about the opportunity.
