Job description

Faribault Foods Inc., the leading food manufacturing plant located in Rita Ranch, is looking for an experienced and safety-conscious UtilitiesTechnician to join our line maintenance team! We manufacture, can, and supply whole beans, refried beans, and enchilada sauces in over 15 branded items and numerous custom private labels.


The primary purpose of the Preventative Maintenance Technician is to ensure continued operation, maintenance, and repairs of all Company equipment. Perform equipment repair and maintenance and perform preventative maintenance to maximize equipment uptime. Ensure that maintenance work performed maintains or improves product quality and production efficiency. Maintain plant efficiency and a safe working environment. Maintenance performance shall be consistent with company goals, business unit Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) to include safety, quality, efficiency, productivity, and customer service.


1st Shift: Friday - Monday - 10 hour shifts


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following is a list of duties to be performed by the Maintenance Technician. However, the duties are in no way limited to/by the list.


Participate as a Team Member of the assigned Business Unit.

  • As a member of the shift Maintenance Team provide rapid response to equipment related problems to maximize equipment uptime and production efficiencies.
  • Apply maintenance troubleshooting skills in a wide variety of machine applications in response to production requirements.
  • Communicate information to Maintenance Coordinator and to the Production Supervisor regarding technical issues, equipment problems, and continuous improvement ideas.
  • Document equipment repairs/findings onto work orders for input into the Computerized Maintenance Management System (Maximo).
  • Perform interface and troubleshoot of Programmable Logic Controls (PLC's) and PLC controlled equipment with a Lap Top Computer and various plug-in modules.
  • Generate work orders, enter and retrieve data from the CMMS system.
  • Troubleshoot control wiring, relay logic, motor drive circuits, control system devices, photo eyes, limit switches, proximity switches, and transducers.
  • Utilize Digital Volt Meter, Mega OHM Meter and AMP probes to diagnose electrical problems.
  • Operate and calibrate automation systems in order to provide accurate information.
  • Perform Preventive Maintenance (PM's), inspections and/or repair of equipment during shutdowns which may require weekend work and/or shift reassignment in response to production requirements.
  • Support the installation and start-up of new equipment.
  • Perform welding and machine shop tasks related to repair of equipment and machinery.
  • Work with equipment vendors or technical representatives on re-builds, service visits and equipment training to reduce downtime. Work directly with Production personnel, Quality personnel, and support members to problem-solve and trouble-shoot to correct machine malfunctions.
  • Assist operators in machine change-overs.
  • Perform mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic installation, repair and service of machinery and support systems as required.
  • Perform systematic preventive maintenance, including electrical and mechanical adjustments, inspections and minor repairs on plant equipment as necessary.
  • Complete special projects as required, including design and repair work on material handling systems and other mechanical and electrical devices.
  • Design and fabricate parts to improve machine / equipment operation and safety.
  • Address all mechanical, electrical, material and safety discrepancies as detected and/or report these discrepancies to appropriate personnel as necessary.
  • Rotate jobs within business unit and with other business units as assigned. Rotate on alternative shifts as required.
  • Train production technicians and maintenance personnel as requested.
  • Maintain proper safety conditions of equipment and of Company assets.
  • Maintain an organized, clean and safe work area.
  • Work in confined and tight spaces.
  • Demonstrate good attendance.
  • Effectively read, write, speak and comprehend English.
  • Comply with area Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Quality Assurance Parameters (QAPs), Good Manufacturing Process (GMPs) Procedures, and ISO Standards. Be knowledgeable in all required Quality Assurance checks and in HACCP related items.
  • Comply with all company safety procedures and guidelines and comply with all company guidelines and policies.
  • Clean and sanitize machines to meet legal and quality standards. Maintain a clean, organized work area respecting GMPs.
  • Ensure that job operations maintain or improve product quality. Stop and correct job operation if product quality is affected negatively.
  • Work daily overtime and weekends as required.
  • Maintain OSHA Certified Forklift License (if applicable).

QUALIFICATIONS/ REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent; one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated training and experience in electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, electronic, pneumatic and Programmable Logic Controllers preferred. Preferred experience in those fields with an emphasis in high-speed packaging. Demonstrated training and experience in steam/boilers, air handling systems, ammonia systems, plumbing systems, welding, and millwrighting preferable. Working knowledge of hand and power tools. Ability to read blue prints, diagrams and schematics. Ability to work with limited supervision and perform effectively in a team-oriented environment. Working knowledge of computers and software applications, preferably with MS Office applications.


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English. Ability to read and comprehend moderate to complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write technical correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to production team members, other technicians, and management.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measurement, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute ratio, percent, draws and interprets bar graphs.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the normal duties of this position, a Maintenance Technician must have the ability to visually identify defective parts. The employee is regularly required to walk and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, sit, and stoop, kneel, push, couch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb on ladders and portable stairways, or balance. Must be able to climb into machinery for cleaning purposes. The team member must also have the ability to hear machine operations sounds that may indicate defective parts, machine failures, changes in speed and other routine running conditions. Must be able to work on multiple levels, such as catwalks, ladders, etc. Must be able to demonstrate manual and finger dexterity. Must be able to work extended hours and/or overtime as required. The team member frequently is required to stand or walk. The team member is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The team member must perform heavy lifting and/or moving of up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the team member regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The team member is frequently exposed to fumes of airborne particles and toxic chemicals. The individual must be able to wear the appropriate protective equipment to accommodate the protection needs of the present hazard. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The operator will be exposed to wet and humid conditions and have to work with cleaning chemicals, toxic chemicals, and some dust in the atmosphere. The noise level in the work environment is at a level that hearing protection must be worn. Working in close proximity with moving forklift trucks is required.


Experience maintaining Industrial equipment
