Job description

The King County's Facilities Management Division (FMD), Building Operations Section (BOS), is looking for an experienced Plumbing and Mechanical I Lead, who will supervise our crew of highly skilled tradespeople. The ideal applicant will have the knowledge and know how of a experienced plumber and excellent leadership skills. A big part of leadership in our organization is good communication skills. This role will interact with our internal/external customers and staff.
This is a swing shift position M- F 2:00 - 10:30 pm and a 10% shift differential will be paid on top of the hourly listed above.
This position is responsible for the planning, scheduling, reviewing, and executing of the crew's work. This work includes maintaining, repairing, and installing mechanical and plumbing systems and components such as pipes, storm and sanitary sewers, wet and dry fire sprinkler systems, valves, steam valves, traps, drains, basins, tubs, faucets, sinks, hydrants, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration systems, and kitchen and laundry installations typically found in various types of commercial buildings as well as secure detention facilities.

  • Identify scope of work, prioritize daily work assignments, and assign work to individuals.
  • Direct, coordinate and assist individuals in their regular duties.
  • Coordinate the unit's work with other crafts.
  • Establish and maintain repair and maintenance records.
  • Establish procedures and implement training programs.
  • Calculate labor, material, and equipment charges, permit fees and subcontractor costs for various projects; write purchase orders; and track materials for delivery.
  • Oversee the work of other crew members for specific projects.
  • Assist the foreman in planning and implementing of special projects associated with maintenance, preventative maintenance, and construction projects.
  • Respond to trouble calls, customer complaints, equipment failures and work requests.
  • Plan, design, construct, and coordinate assigned construction projects.
  • Ensure all required documents such as staff payroll records and work orders are properly filled out and turned in.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of installation and maintenance of domestic water, wastewater, and vent systems
  • Knowledge of uniform plumbing codes
  • Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements
  • Knowledge of installation and maintenance of irrigation and fire sprinkler systems, pumping systems and HVAC closed loop systems.
  • Knowledge of brazing/soldering techniques
  • Skill in written and oral communication
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints.
  • Skill in using tools typical of the plumbing trade.
  • Skill in providing leadership and direction to others
  • Skill in planning, coordinating and evaluating the work of others.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Skill in providing training to others.
  • Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Skill in using current office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, database and email.

Licensing Requirements:
  • PL 01 License

Additional Position Information:

  • This position has been designated by department leadership as a FIRST RESPONDER in the event of a proclaimed emergency. Meaning this position has a role in emergency response and is responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence, environment and/or restoration of order.
  • We are looking to fill positions in both our north location at the King County Courthouse and our south location at the King County Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, WA, covering both day and swing shift.
  • This position must be available for call-out for which appropriate premiums will be paid. Work shifts, and hours may vary due to maintenance and project requirements.
  • We are also creating a hiring list for any future positions that become available in the next 12 months.
  • This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and are therefore overtime eligible.
  • Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday, comprising a 40-hour workweek; schedule and work location are to be determined.
  • Incumbents in these positions are represented by the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters, Local 32.
  • Final appointment is contingent upon successfully passing a thorough federal and county background investigation and clearing a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Applicants will only be permitted to test once every six months
