This is skilled technical examination and inspection work in securing and maintaining regulatory compliance with municipal and other applicable codes and ordinances governing all phases of construction involving industrial, commercial, and residential structures. Aligned with certification(s) work includes responsibility for the review, evaluation, and processing of architectural, building and engineering plans and specifications; inspection of the construction, alteration and repair activities on building sites and sign installations; and evaluation of existing facilities to ensure regulatory compliance with Florida Building Codes and local City ordinances, and all technical and safety standards. Work requires the exercise of considerable sound judgment, firmness, tact, and initiative, and is performed with considerable independence. Employees working in this classification, are eligible for additional pay incentives for each State of Florida Inspector and/or Plans Examiner certifications that are maintained for other trades.
- Performs detailed review of building diagrams, blueprints, sketches, plans and specifications for compliance with the FBC and local regulations for construction, prior to issuance of building permits for proposed building construction, land use, or building development modifications
- Coordinates with the Chief Inspector regarding issues that arise during plan examination
- Computes and inputs data in order to calculate building permit and impact fees
- Occasionally assists with inspections of building installations in process for compliance with plans submitted, permit applications and building code requirements
- Assists in the investigation of complaints regarding violation of the applicable codes and ordinances and assists with the prosecution of violators when necessary
- Reviews and evaluates drawings and specifications; frequently assigned to inspect buildings in the process of construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with plans submitted, permit applications and building code requirements related to flood resistant design and construction
- Electronically prepares reports and maintains inspection records of work performed and properly enters inspection data, including documents and images using provided hardware and software systems and equipment
- Indicates revisions required for conformance to building codes and issues verbal or written instructions for correction.
- Reviews qualifications of contractors prior to issuance of building permits.
- Assists contractors, architects, engineers, and the public with code compliance interpretation.
- Works with developers and architects on preliminary project planning.
- Performs related work as required.

Position requires the operation of a City vehicle.

Education and Experience:
- High School diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency is preferred.
- Possession of a Standard License in one discipline (Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical) issued by Florida's building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB) as an Inspector or Plans Examiner. Multiple licenses or the verifiable ability to obtain same is required (Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and/or Electrical).
(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
Licenses and Certifications:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver's license by date of hire.
Possession and maintenance of certification as Standard Plans Examiner through the State Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
