We have an exciting opportunity for a Planetary Geologist to join the team with our Science & Exploration Division.

The Planetary Geologist will:

  • Support the Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Directorate (ARES) at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the field of astromaterials and planetary science, while providing support for NASA missions
  • Lead the Experimental Impact Lab (EIL) by developing new methods and procedures to constrain the physical mechanism controlling impact cratering kinetics
  • Study the science associated with hypervelocity impacts in a planetary context, including shock metamorphism of minerals/rocks and impact cratering
  • Develop an understanding of how to integrate the three high-velocity launch facilities in the EIL to the standards of the customer
  • Support ARES growth and provide service to NASA and external users
  • Develop new lines of research, lead, and apply for competed research grants
  • Assist with routine upkeep and maintenance of the EIL
  • Summarize, communicate, and publish quantitative scientific results, and actively participate in safety programs
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Requisition Qualifications:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • A BS degree and a minimum of 2-5 years experience are required
  • Must have at least 3 years of laboratory experience, relevant experience can substitute for a portion of the laboratory experience
  • Must have knowledge of kinetic theory, petrology, and mineralogy
  • Must have knowledge of image processing and data reduction and interpretation
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills

 Requisition Preferences:

  • Knowledge and experience with electrical, vacuum and/or pressure systems a plus
  • Industry experience a plus  
  • Experience with analytical technique development and innovation
  • Experience with astromaterials and planetary science

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
