Phlebotomist Technician

• Primary Accountability

Performs Phlebotomy functions, prepares specimen from laboratory testing and non-technical duties

• Primary Responsibilities
  • Verifies tests ordered by a provider on the EHR; Electronic Medical Record, and financial receipts; bringing discrepancies to the attention of the Lab Coordinator
  • Verifies patient identification with the use of two identifiers
  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and finger sticks
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic techniques, following department procedures
  • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting the types of tubes collected on the daily log
  • Maintains safe, secure and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; returning unresolved orders to the originator for further clarification and notifying supervisor about them
  • Assists with telephone calls to outside labs, vendors etc
  • Assists with lab order and organizing lab supplies

  • Professional and Technical Knowledge:
    • At minimum, must have successfully completed a Phlebotomist training program OR must be a registered phlebotomist
    • Current CPR/BLS certificate required
  • Technical Skills:
    • Possesses a working knowledge of specimen requirements and handling of specimens Ability to perform perform venipuncture and skin puncture of all ages
    • Experience with point of care testing for waived test
    • Experienced in working in a Reference Laboratory
  • Communication Skills:
    • Strong customer service and excellent communication skills
    • Bilingual, English/Spanish or English/Creole
