Phlebotomist- Per Diem

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the Phlebotomist/Point of Care Specialist provides some of the support services needed to ensure quality laboratory services and in this role is expected to be courteous and efficient. He/She performs pediatric, adolescent, and adult patient phlebotomy, routine specimen preparation, waived testing procedures, responsible for supply inventory and the general maintenance of the laboratory areas.

GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs daily quality assurance activities according to department quality standards:

• Performs waived testing in the clinical point of care areas
• Performs proficiency testing in the waived testing fields as administered by approved program to maintain laboratory compliance with state and federal regulatory agencies
• Performs phlebotomy: venipuncture, finger sticks and heels sticks on pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients
• Identifies specimens appropriately and processes specimens for acquisition or disposition according to standard practice
• Performs daily quality control and documents results and any corrective action taken
• Prepares specimen for storage, transport and testing on site or off site
• Monitors temperature controls and documents findings
• Performs daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of point of care equipment and documents findings and any corrective action taken
• Advises medical staff on proper collection techniques and correct quantities for specimens
• Instructs patients on pre-appointment procedures for special tests (e.g. FBS, O & P, 24 hour urine collection)
• Responsible for reviewing all encounters or test request forms for completeness, legibility and accuracy to ensure that all information required for test processing and billing are provided

Performs laboratory maintenance, procurement and clerical tasks:

• Maintains work areas and equipment in clean and orderly condition following infection control procedures
• Ensures proper disposal of contaminated and hazardous materials and specimens
• Reports unusual incidents or circumstances, hazards and patient conditions to manager/supervisor
• Keeps equipment in working order to ensure reliability of tests according to departmental practices and procedures
• Under supervision, performs certain laboratory procedures in the waived and moderate complexity categories
• Checks inventory of laboratory supplies and orders sufficient quantities to prevent delays in testing
• Catalogues and stocks supplies according to preservation standards
• Records, files and distributes laboratory reports
• Maintains laboratory statistics

Department Communications and Professional Standards:

• Communicate significant test results directly to provider/nurse in a timely manner
• Reports any problems to be followed up to the next shift
• Interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and fellow employees are fostered in a courteous, professional and friendly manner
• Should be neat, well groomed, observe health center dress code and wear an identification badge while on duty
• Ensures all designated health center information is kept confidential at all times

REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:

Education: High School education or equivalent

Experience:

• Completion of phlebotomy training program.

Preffered:

• Registration with ASCP, NCA or approved by licensing /registration body preferred.
• Previous experience with Pediatric & Adult phlebotomy preferred.
