JOB TITLE: Phlebotomist
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Assists in the delivery of health care and patient care management.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to the Office Manager. Training and updates received from the MA Manager/Clinical Quality Assurance Manager, Office Manager, and Director of Clinical Practices

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. Involves standing and walking. Requires exposure to bodily fluids. Occasionally lifts items weighing up to 50 pounds.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to bio-hazardous materials, medicinal preparations. Fast paced, busy medical office.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (List may not include all the duties assigned.)
- Greet lab patients and confirm their name and date of birth to ensure the correct labs are being drawn.
- Checks patient electronic health record to make sure that Physicians' lab orders are entered into the chart prior to drawing labs. If a patient presents for a laboratory appointment only check the chart for the provider's requested labs.
- Verify the patient's insurance. Enter the billing information into NextGen Lab Master based on the Lab Reference Guide.
- Process the labs through Orchard if in house and LabCorp or Quest for labs going out.
- Check for special tests ordered that are indicated in the Other Test box on the Lab Master. Process special tests through the LabCorp Link or on a paper requisition.
- Responsible for labelling tubes correctly and spinning in centrifuge as required. Some labs will need to be frozen.
- Ensure that labs are prepared in a timely manner including time sensitive tests for courier pick-up at set times of the workday.
- Administers and documents routine immunizations.
- Obtain ABNs as necessary.
- Obtain High Deductible Waivers as necessary.
- Inform self-pay patients of costs prior to drawing labs.
- Follows protocols in the care and maintenance of medical equipment in office.
- Stocks lab areas with necessary instruments and supplies.
- Returns calls to patients per Physician request.
- Provides patients with educational information per Physician approval.
- Remains current with the policies mandated by Federal and local governments, Medicare/Medicaid programs and other private healthcare programs regarding handling of laboratory work.

- Knowledge of medical practices to assist in giving patient care.
- Knowledge of phlebotomy procedures.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Knowledge of different insurance company requirements with regard to laboratory handling and billing, including appropriate co-payments.
- Skill in maintaining clear notes and inputting correct data in patients' electronic health records.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, other staff, and the public.
- Skill in using computers.
- Skill in using calculator.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to adapt to changes in the department.
- Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
- Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
- Ability to identify problems.

- Follows compliance requirements pertaining to collection and handling of laboratory specimens including, but not exclusive of, collection, temperature, containers and proper disposal of biohazard materials.

- Identifies, reports and/or prevents any fraudulent or unethical behavior.
- Initiates notification to management if inappropriate behavior is observed within the organization.

role of ARA Nurse

In order for this employee to carry out his/her job (carry out TPO) in a manner that best serves our patients, the employee needs access the afore mentioned computer role. Role descriptions are explicitly defined in our HIPAA manual. Access to computer information is password protected. Upon termination of an employee, his/her password will be deleted from the system.
QualificationsEDUCATION:
CMA, RMA, or Phlebotomy Certification
EXPERIENCE:
Two years' experience in phlebotomy.
