POSITION SUMMARY:
The Pharmacy Tech-Informatics will work with existing software systems to extract data in order to maximize operational efficiency of our automated dispensing machines. This position will also configure new machines or reconfigure existing machines to improve medication delivery. The Technician will ensure accurate barcode drug identification throughout the organization. In addition, the Pharmacy Tech will be responsible for adding medications and maintaining the pharmacy software system. The Pharmacy Tech assists pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining the medication inventory, and maintaining patient records to assure that patients receive pharmaceutical care which is consistent with the mission of the department and the hospital. The Pharmacy Tech works with the Director of Pharmacy, Pharmacy Manager and Clinical Informatics Pharmacist to develop and implement programs to enhance pharmacy and/or hospital operations and best medication safety practices. The Technician will be responsible for investigating billing inconsistencies in the pharmacy module or the automated dispensing system, receiving of all drugs (with barcode validation in all pharmacy systems), assist with hardware issues on the nursing floors involving dispensing and storage. The technician will also assist with system upgrades, unit dose packaging of products that are not available in a unit of use barcoded packaging. The Pharmacy Tech-Informatics will train Pharmacy Technicians on the use of barcode technology with the electronic medical record and Pyxis. These activities are performed within the context of established policies, procedures and techniques of Enloe Health, the Enloe Health Pharmacy, and federal and state standards and regulations. Due to the software system needs being addressed primarily during the Monday through Friday workweek, the incumbent in this position will work primarily a Monday through Friday schedule and will not rotate week-ends with the other Pharmacy Technicians. However, they may be scheduled to work occasional weekends, PM or night shifts due to staffing and project needs. Occasional travel will be required between sites.
EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE:
Minimum:
One year of hospital Pharmacy Tech experience in an inpatient setting
Desired:
One year computer experience with windows, pharmacy software, Pyxis software and automated dispensing units
Previous system administration responsibilities
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
Currently registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the State of California
Pharmacy Technician National Certification (within 1 year of hire) (dept tracked)
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES:
Ability to work independently on special program development and implementation. Ability to work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to organize and perform all duties with accuracy and efficiency. Knowledge of pharmacy terminology and abbreviations. Knowledge of brand and generic names of medications. Ability to recognize how database files interact and extrapolate how changes to one database affects overall pharmacy system function. Ability to transcribe pharmacy and nursing records. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule. Ability to use a calculator and perform pharmaceutical calculations. Ability to manipulate needles, syringes, ampoules and vials using aseptic technique. Understanding of policy and procedure for pharmaceutical special preparations. Ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives and choose the appropriate course of action. Ability to communicate and develop a positive working relationship with co-workers and other hospital personnel. Ability to utilize good telephone etiquette, including: identification of unit and self when receiving incoming calls, refer incoming calls to appropriate person, respond to information requests with courtesy, accuracy and respect. Demonstrate a desire to learn and actively pursue that desire. Ability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients as required by practice setting. Must be able to fulfill the essential functions of the position.
