Job Summary
Assists pharmacist in preparation of prescriptions for dispensing and maintenance of drug inventory, coordinates third party billing for prescriptions, and collects patient payments.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Prepares prescriptions.
- Receives new prescription and refill requests, verifies information, and enters into the pharmacy software system.
- Selects the appropriate drug, brand, form, strength, and directions.
- Counts the number of pills, capsules, or tablets and packages the required number into the appropriate container.
- Affixes label with instructions on use and the expiration date.
- Assesses for drug interactions.
- Processes prescription insurance claims.
- Determines patients’ insurance carrier, verifies coverage and submits the claim through the pharmacy software system to verify coverage.
- Updates insurance information in pharmacy system.
- Collaborates with pharmacist and prescriber if an alternative medication is needed.
- Collects the amount of payment due from the patient.
- Provides guidance to patients.
- Answers pharmacy phone and provides assistance.
- Answers questions about prescriptions.
- Educates patients and caregivers on appropriate use of medication, including frequency and method of administration.
- Refers patients and caregivers to pharmacist for more in-depth questions related to prescriptions or medication counseling.
- Supports pharmacist with inventory management and maintaining the pharmacy.
- Assesses the availability of medications in the pharmacy and orders medications needing replenishment.
- Assists with medication returns.
- Removes medications past the expiration date.
- Ensures medications are stored correctly.
- Cleans pharmacy area and equipment.
Qualifications and Skills
Completion of a Pharmacy Technician program. Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician in good standing with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy. Current certification with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), National Healthcare Association (NHA), or equivalent certification agency.
