JOB SUMMARY
Pharmacy Technician (licensed in WA) to assist Pharmacists in the daily processes in the Pharmacy Department. Duties to include but not limited to: IV Mixture, place and receive orders, outdate checks, fill orders for other departments, maintain perpetual inventories, prepare unit dose medications, fill and deliver medication orders for patients including daily cassettes, enter medication charges for all patients and answer the telephone. Technician will work within the parameters of the USP chapter 797 and must complete annual competency training. All work performed by a Pharmacy Technician will be under the direct supervision and control of a licensed pharmacist as set forth in RCW 18.64A.030.
PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:
- Preparation of IV admixture or other sterile products in accordance with practice as set forth in USP chapter 797. Sterile preparation will be limited to technicians who have been trained and checked for competency by a licensed pharmacist. Competency will be checked on an annual basis. All preparations by a technician will receive a final check and documentation by a licensed pharmacist at the completion of preparation.
- Pharmacy technicians will perform inventory maintenance functions in pharmacy and as prescribed by the pharmacy manager throughout the WBH system:
- Place and check in daily orders.
- Trouble shoots supply problems with wholesaler or other suppliers.
- Perform drug storage area checks and outdate maintenance
- Assist in annual inventory as required.
- Fill orders for routine stock items in ER, OR, CCU and other peripheral areas.
- Maintain perpetual inventories in areas where they are kept on a limited basis.
- Accurately maintains inventory of Schedule II controlled substances.
- Fill and deliver orders for patient administration by way of a unit does drug distribution system. Orders filled and sent to patient care areas will be pre-screened, entered in a patient profile and given a final check by a licensed pharmacist prior to release.
- Fill unit dose cassettes for daily exchange. Deliver unit dose cassettes at daily prescribed time after contents checked by a licensed pharmacist.
- Accurately enters daily charges into computer system for subsequent billing.
- May be asked to check contents and service crash carts or other emergency boxes after use.
- Package bulk medications in unit dose containers. Enter record of packaged unit dose medications into appropriate log and assign lot number and expiration date. Logged and assembled work is checked and initialed by licensed pharmacist.
- Will answer telephone and may screen and answer supply or other non-technical related questions. In no instances will technicians take orders or answer technical or clinically related information by way of telephone or other verbal means.
- Checks pharmacy and hospital areas for outdated medications and solutions.
- Maintains pharmacy work areas.
- Inventories shelf stock each shift and adds to order.
- Restocks pharmacy areas each shift.
The following are expectations of all WhidbeyHealth and Clinic employees:
- Attends a minimum of 80% of monthly department staff meetings throughout the year. Actively participates in monthly department staff meetings, to include active participation in setting department goals and supporting department functions to meet set goals.
- Checks hospital email account a minimum of three (3) times per week.
- Utilizes AIDET in all interactions with patients, employees and visitors.
- Completes all mandatory education within given timeframe.
- Adheres to all hospital, department, and safety policies, procedures and guidelines at all times.
JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High School diploma or equivalent required. Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPHT) preferred.
Training and Experience
One (1) year of current hospital experience is preferred. Preferred IV admixture and chemotherapy preparation experience.

Current Washington State Pharmacy Technician license.
