Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
DEFINITION
Under the general direction of the registered Staff Pharmacist, to perform specialized clerical work in the preparation of prescriptions and other medications for inpatients and outpatients; maintain comprehensive patient medication files; work with and assist pharmacist in the maintenance and manufacture of routine intravenous solutions and special solutions as requested by physicians; and does other related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry-level class in the Pharmacy Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Pharmacy Technician II class by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way would be:
Education
Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program as evidenced by receipt of certification/registration in the State of California.
Experience
None to six months experience or some job related formal training.
Licensure/Certification
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a pharmacy Technician issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy.
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Good customer (physicians, nurses, and patients) service.
Professional standards and practices; federal, Board of Pharmacy, The Joint Commission and DPHS laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to patient care, and dispensing of legend and non-legend pharmaceuticals and poisons.
Proper storage and security procedures used in working with pharmaceutical materials and products.
Pharmaceutical and medical terminology.
Types and names of drugs and medications.
Medi-Cal/MIA laws dispensing limits, cash and billing requirements;
Office procedures and equipment.
Basic principles mathematics and pharmaceutical calculations.
Weight and liquid measures commonly used in pharmacies.
Laws, rules, and regulations affecting a pharmacy.
Good asceptic technique and procedures used in the compounding of intravenous solutions (I.V.) and in the prepackaging of tables and capsules.
Hospital established policies quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control policies and procedures.
Basic understanding of the automated storage and dispensing devices (e.g., Pyxis®, Omnicell®, etc).
Ability to:
Understand and follow English oral and written instructions.
Make basic mathematical calculations.
Maintain comprehensive reports relative to the dispensing of medications.
Deal effectively with the public, health care providers and co-workers.
Safely handle pharmaceutical and pharmacy equipment.
Read and interpret prescriptions from physician’s orders.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
Work effectively under stress and in emergency situations.
Manage emergency or crisis situations; requires judgment/action which could result in undesirable patient outcomes.
