Job description

Long Island Community Hospital has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Pharmacy Supervisor- Full Time Days; rotating schedule/with occasional weekend hours.

In this role, the successful candidate Responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of department activities. Coordinates formulation and dispensing of pharmaceuticals, procurement and storage, and control of medications. Assists the Director and Clinical Pharmacy Manager in ensuring all activities are conducted in accordance with hospital standards and objectives as well as all regulatory, legal and accreditation agency requirements. In the Directors absence, works with Clinical Pharmacy Manger to ensure the smooth operation of the department. Responsible for staff scheduling calendar and daily assignment of duties. Responsible for adjustments of assignments to respond to changes in workload unanticipated absences. Assists in the implementation and staff orientation for clinical pharmacy activities.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Skills

  • Assists in educating staff to monitor drug therapy of patients for appropriateness and review of response to medications.
  • Confers with physicians regarding issues and requirements of the patient.
  • Assist in the process of research and evaluation of pharmaceutical products as to quality, stability, and utility.
  • Provides drug information to professional staff of product changes and insures all hospital clinical personnel receive the most current information possible.
  • Assists in the organization of drug education programs for the Pharmacy Department.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature.
  • Works with the clinical pharmacist to implement drug selection, patients monitoring, formulary and drug control programs implemented.
  • Works with the Clinical Pharmacist to implement policy regarding therapeutic conversion, dosage protocols, and IV to oral conversion.

2. Functional Skills

  • Assists in the orientation and training of staff pharmacists to support and implement measures proposed by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and approved by the Medical staff.
  • Supervises activities of the pharmacy staff engaged in receiving, stocking and maintaining pharmaceutical supplies, prepackaging and labeling medications.
  • Supervises compounding and dispensing medications and delivery of medications and other pharmaceuticals throughout the hospital.
  • Inspects and oversees inspection of drug deliveries to ensure accuracy and acceptable condition of shipments adhering to contractual agreements.
  • Insures proper storage of items and transfer of stock to appropriate drug dispensing areas.
  • Periodically monitors inventory levels of drugs to ensure all items are in sufficient supply.
  • Maintains adequate staffing levels, schedules are coordinated, overtime is monitored, and assignments are managed to ensure effective departmental workflow.
  • Place orders through wholesalers to procure pharmaceutical products.

3. Administrative Skills

  • Assists the Director in development of short and long range goals and objectives. Implements and administers plans and programs to achieve agreed upon goals.
  • Develops and revises policies and procedures required for smooth and efficient departmental functioning.
  • Assists the Director to interview and hire personnel.
  • Assists in the compilation of performance evaluations for personnel.
  • Performs progressive discipline of personnel according to collective bargaining agreements, as required, when necessary.
  • Work with pharmacy management to implement the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee Quality Improvement Initiatives.
  • Identifies, develops, prioritizes, and assigns departmental tasks/projects; monitors progress; looks for ways to expand and improve services.
  • Involved in recruiting new hires to the department and utilizes BMHMC Recruitment Guidelines.
  • Ensures that all staff members have a performance planning discussion outlining job functions and performance standards.
  • Identifies and ensures that staff has adequate training to perform job requirements; acts as professional resource for staff.
  • Gives employees candid feedback regarding job performance; recognizes employees for good performance.
  • Ensures that staff compliance with governmental, regulatory, and Joint Commission Standards. Assists in the development of departmental improvement plans.
  • Responsible for monthly schedule of staff and to assign employees for daily job assignments.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Knowledge of drugs and other pharmaceuticals and regulations relating to storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals
Completion of a Bachelors Degree in pharmacy. Completion of an advanced degree or certification in a related field.
Current New York State Licensure as a Pharmacist.
5-7 years of progressive responsibility in institutional pharmacy practice, including 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
Experience in regulatory compliance and coordination of pharmacy services with subordinate personnel.
Good interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with hospital personnel, patients, physicians, and members of community. Application of these skills to lead pharmacy staff and convey services to other disciplines providing care at facility.
Requires working knowledge of computers, including databases, spreadsheets and word processing. Advanced Information Technology skills desired.
Knowledge of the educational equipment necessary to meet the specific needs of the patient population served by considering the patients age, growth and development, medical condition, physical abilities, psychosocial status, potential language barriers, religious beliefs, and levels of comprehension.
