Pharmacy Medication Technician

The Pharmacy Medication Technician assists with the accurate and complete collection of medication history data in a variety of hospital settings. This role prioritizes the process of obtaining an accurate and complete medication list upon hospital admission to ensure patient safety.
(20%)* Obtains an accurate and complete admission medication list via a face-to-face interview with patients to include prescription, over the counter, and herbal products noting drug name, dose, frequency, compliance, and last dose taken. This may require collaboration with alternative information sources such as family, physician office, nursing home, or retail pharmacy.

(20%)* Communicates effectively and uses advanced interviewing skills to conduct the medication history interview with patients in a manner that is professional and non-invasive.

(15%)* Problem solves and applies critical thinking skills in obtaining admission medications lists for a wide variety of patient populations.

(15%)* Applies advanced computer skills to gather information and document the patient’s admission medication list.

(15%)* Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety, and medical information.

(15%)* Obtains and documents any known drug allergies and reactions.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS

Pharmacy Technician Licensure required - New hires and transfers before October 1, 2015 must possess a full technician license through the State of Michigan or show proof that they have applied. Incumbents before October 1, 2015 must possess the CPhT – National Certification for pharmacy technicians. Effective October 1, 2015, all incumbents, new hires and transfers to this position must possess a pharmacy technician full license through the state of Michigan. The pharmacy technician license must be maintained in order to be qualified to hold this position.

High School Diploma or GED required.

One or more years of experience as a pharmacy technician (retail preferred) or allied health professional, with knowledge of medications including brand/generic names, available dosages, frequencies, and indications.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with people of diverse backgrounds and at all levels within the medical center and in the community.

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Ability to create and foster a cooperative teamwork environment.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time.

May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material.

Must follow MyMichigan Health blood-borne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.

May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
