Position Summary:
The Peer Mentor will provide support services to individuals on public assistance as they work towards self sufficiency; non dependency on public assistance. Under supervision of Easterseals Peer Mentor Supervisor, the Peer Mentor will function as a coach and role model to peers
Position Description:
- Work with up to 25 families at a time
- Help each family develop their own strategy for success and create a plan to support them;
- Offer weekly outreach to each family;
- Facilitate connections to appropriate support needed;
- Exhibiting competency in coping skills
- Willing to share personal story
- Serving as an advocate, motivator and mentor
- Be able to offer support and encouragement to families as they reach their goals;
- Accept calls from these families as needed;
- Work no less than 40 hours weekly with a priority on evening availability;
- Document all activity and submit weekly reports
- Meet with HCJFS teams weekly, biweekly, or monthly to review family circumstances (virtually or in person depending on need and circumstance).
- Assist clients stepping off public assistance with financial stability
- Other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Lived experience of dependency of public assistance
- Knowledge of public assistance services and programs
- Knowledge and skills to teach and engage in basic problem-solving strategies
- Knowledge and skills sufficient to use community resources necessary for ability to teach those skills to other individuals
- A valid driver’s license and insurance
- Ability to pass a drug screening test
Job Requirements:
- High school diploma/GED required
- Peer certification provided free & paid within first 6 months; CDCA within the first year
- Valid driver’s license and auto insurance
Essential Functions/Physical Demands:
- Positional: Frequent standing, sitting and walking. Occasional driving in accordance with the job duties assigned.
- Gross Mobility: Rare climbing, crawling, crouching and kneeling. Infrequent balancing and stooping. Frequent to constant reaching, handling and fingering.
- Sensory: Rare tasting/smelling. Infrequent use of color vision. Occasional use of far and midrange visual acuity as well as depth perception. Rare use of color vision. Constant talking and listening.
