Housing Works fights for funding and legislation to ensure that all people living with HIV/AIDS have access to quality housing, healthcare, HIV prevention, and treatment, among other lifesaving services.

This position is included in a bargaining unit of Housing Works' New York City employees represented by a labor union known as the Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union ("RWDSU"). Accordingly, the RWDSU has the exclusive right to bargain over the terms and conditions of employment related to this position and this position may become covered by the terms of a collective bargaining agreement (a "CBA") between Housing Works and the RWDSU
Compensation Range: $19/hr - $21/hr commensurate with experience
Overview: 

The Housing Works Inc. Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) Program is a collaboration between Housing Works and the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice (MOCJ) to provide court mandated, risk-need-responsivity services to jail-bound individuals 18 years of age and older who are involved in Manhattan criminal and supreme court systems. Under the supervision of the Clinical Coordinator, the Peer Navigator will support the case management functions for Housing Works ATI program clients. The Peer Navigator will provide appointment escorts and other navigation support, facilitate weekly program orientations with newly enrolled clients and provide peer counseling support. The Peer Navigator will be a self-starter, able to use lived experience working with persons involved in the NYC criminal legal system with substance use, mental health or behavioral health needs.
Responsibilities:

  • Provides navigation and transportation support for clients in need from court location to enrollment location
  • Facilitates weekly program orientation groups with newly enrolled clients
  • Facilitates weekly peer support groups and other evidence-based interventions
  • Conducts crisis intervention and conducts 1:1 sessions with ATI clients in alert status of non-compliance prior to violation reports to the courts
  • Assists Case Managers when coordinating with external service providers to obtain weekly compliance updates regarding client engagement in services
  • Participates in clinical case conferences to promote integrated care
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor
  • Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary OASAS and Reentry teams
  • Provide culturally competent services in accordance to Housing Works policies and practices.
  • Attend and participate staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Responsiveness to emails, texts and phone calls.
  • Actively participate in advocacy events and calls to action.
  • Displays Housing Works core values: All-in, Stronger Together, Membership and High Performance in all day-to-day activities.
Minimum Requirements 
  • HS Diploma or HSE required. CRPA (Certified Peer Recovery Advocate) preferred. 
  • Skilled in delivery of motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral techniques and risk-need-responsivity interventions.
  • Lived experience with criminal legal system
  • Preferably bi-lingual in Spanish.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent or proficient technical skills to perform tasks related to Microsoft Office, email and case management systems.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with the team.
  • Dependability and reliability to arrive and depart timely for scheduled shift.
  • Cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed approach to care.
  • Prior experience working in the field of criminal justice, pre-trial to post-release services.
  • Ability to frequently travel within the boroughs via public transportation and work from transient office locations including criminal and supreme courts and Housing Works clinic locations.
  • Ability to lift 25-35lbs.
