As an academic medical center with a rich history of providing life-saving treatment in Southern Nevada, UMC serves as the anchor hospital of the Las Vegas Medical District, offering Nevada's highest level of care to promote successful medical outcomes for patients.
We are home to Nevada's ONLY Level I Trauma Center, Designated Pediatric Trauma Center, Burn Care Center, and Transplant Center. We are a Pathway Designated facility by ANCC, and we are on our journey to Magnet status.
Position Summary:
Administers casts, splints, traction devices and soft goods and to assist orthopedic surgeons. Duties include administering appropriate orthopedic techniques, instructing patients, reviewing new equipment, and maintaining supplies.
Job Requirement
Education/Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of experience as a cast orthopedic.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, and; training under supervision of orthopedic surgeon.
Additional and/or Preferred Position Requirements
  • 2 years' experience as an Ortho Tech or MA in outpatient orthopedic clinic.
  • 2 years' experience with casting and splinting.
  • Experience with external fixation removal.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements
Knowledge of:
Anatomy, physiology, bone structure and biomechanics; anatomical positioning and correction; radiographic interpretations; variety of traction devices and their applications; medical terminology; orthopedic treatment techniques; proper stretcher and lifting techniques; sterilization procedures; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; age specific patient care practices; infection control practices and procedures; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Skill in:
Applying various techniques for casts and splints; communicating care and procedure information to patients of diverse backgrounds; applying various orthopedic procedures such as suture removals, specialty casting and splinting, application of dressings; X-ray interpretations; listening; writing reports and conference materials; writing progress notes and charts; organizing work and managing multiple tasks simultaneously; applying wound procedures, such as splinting, bandaging; using electric hand tools; communicating effectively with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, vision to read printed materials and VDT screens, hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
