Position Summary

Position Summary:
Administers casts, splints, traction devices and soft goods and to assist orthopedic surgeons. Duties include administering appropriate orthopedic techniques, instructing patients, reviewing new equipment, and maintaining supplies.
Job Requirement
Education/Experience:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of experience as a cast orthopedic.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, and; training under supervision of orthopedic surgeon.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements
Knowledge of:
Anatomy, bone structure and biomechanics; anatomical positioning and correction; radiographic interpretations; variety of traction devices and their applications; medical terminology; orthopedic treatment techniques; proper stretcher and lifting techniques; sterilization procedures; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; age specific patient care practices; infection control practices and procedures; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures.
Skill in:
Applying various techniques for casts and splints; communicating care and procedure information to patients of diverse backgrounds; applying various orthopedic procedures such as splinting, bandaging, specialty casting and splinting, application of dressings; X-ray interpretations; listening; writing reports and conference materials; writing progress notes and charts; organizing work and managing multiple tasks simultaneously; using electric hand tools; communicating effectively with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, vision to read printed materials and computer screens, hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
