Job Summary
Reporting to the Payroll Manager, this position is responsible for accurate and timely payroll processing for all full-time university employees based upon established, Federal, State and University policies and regulations. This position requires complex reconciliations of the payroll and deduction registers to all supporting pay and deduction documentation. This position is also responsible for analysis and calculating of Virginia Sickness and Disability and Virginia Sickness and Disability Workers Compensation benefit payments, garnishments and tax liens in accordance with Federal and State Laws, rules and regulations. The Payroll Technician assists HR and General Accounting in reconciling payroll transactions within other university and state systems. The Payroll Technician upholds the university’s Code of Ethics and communicates confidentially with employees and university leadership regarding their payroll information, in person, by mail, phone and written correspondence; answering complex questions and applying scenarios unique to individual employees. This position is responsible for electronic transmittal of files to various third party providers and also assists with testing of Banner Human Resource module updates as well as mass changes for employee job or benefit deduction records.
Required Qualifications
Experience ensuring compliance with tax regulations, Fair Labor Standards Act, and other State and Federal regulations, policies and procedures concerning payroll transactions in a human resource or payroll environment. Demonstrated excellent computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word. Experience performing complex reconciliations. Demonstrated experience working in a team environment as well as, to independently process payroll transactions. Demonstrated excellent customer service and exceptional organization skills. Demonstrated experience performing complex mathematical computations with the capability to identify and resolve problems/issues in a timely manner. Detail oriented with demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities in an extremely fast-paced, high-volume, deadline intensive, environment. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and act in an ethical manner at all times.
Additional Considerations
Prior experience working within a state agency and/or in a higher education environment; experience processing payroll transactions; knowledge of VSDP , pre and post-tax deductions and experience processing payroll in the Banner ERP system is preferred.
