Job description

Ferguson Trenching Company, Inc, located in Odenton, Maryland, is a family-owned underground utility contractor with over 50 years of successful experience. We maintain a year-round workforce with 200+ employees. We have an immediate opening in our payroll department for someone eager to assist and learn the entire weekly payroll process.

As a Payroll Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting the payroll department by ensuring accurate and timely processing of employee compensation. Your responsibilities will include assisting in the preparation, distribution, and documentation of payroll, as well as addressing employee inquiries related to payroll matters.

The ideal candidate must be dependable and responsible in maintaining confidentiality with sensitive payroll information. The ideal candidate must be capable of paying meticulous attention to detail, following procedures as guided and have the ability to learn the checks and balances in place to guarantee their work is complete and accurate.

Recurring responsibilities:

  • Achieve complete understanding of the in-house weekly payroll process from start to finish in our Starbuilder accounting application program.
  • Assist in the collection of weekly hours for over 200 employees with varying methods of time collection.
  • Maintain a variety of excel schedules and account analysis related to gross payroll dollars paid.
  • Track and maintain employee deduction schedules related to such items as insurances, advances, garnishments, and other withholdings.
  • Verify and update employee records in the payroll system.
  • Analyze and maintain annual paid time-off schedule.
  • Assist in administering employee benefits programs related to payroll deductions.
  • Assist in compliance and reporting of certified prevailing wages.
  • Process and remit weekly 401k contributions.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll-related matters and insurance related claims.
  • Collaborate with HR and other departments to resolve payroll discrepancies.
  • Contribute to special projects as assigned by the payroll supervisor or manager.

Qualifications and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or certification in payroll or related field is a plus.
  • Must pass a mandatory pre-employment drug testing and will be subject to random testing.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and general knowledge of other computer applications.
  • Previous accounting or office administration a plus.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

This is a full-time in-office position. Starting salary is in the $45,000 to $50,000 range. Benefits include health and dental insurance coverage, 401k plan, life insurance, paid time off, and paid holidays.
