SUMMARY
As a Firefly Payload Stage RE, you will leverage your creative and technical expertise to manage the architecture of the Alpha Payload Segment through the entire product lifecycle from concept & fabrication through test & flight. You will work with and facilitate effective communication between mission management, design engineers (mechanical, electrical, & pneumatics), manufacturing engineers, test & launch teams, and our customers to ensure the production of a reliable vehicle that meets requirements. It will be your responsibility to validate the system architecture, manage design configuration between departments, develop test strategies, test plans, and ensure the verification of the requirements. You will be expected to speak knowledgeably about the current system configuration and provide status updates on performance, changes, schedule, and risk tracking. It will be your job to translate the program plan and the engineering team's vision into execution and mission success for our customers. A successful candidate will be a self-starter, elevate their teammates and be passionate about the space industry.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create and maintain system-level diagrams, schematics, interface control documents and power/mass budgets for the payload segment.
  • Lead all mission-specific vehicle-level analyses and reports including coupled loads, range safety, debris mitigation, contamination plans, technical content for the Payload Users Guide, etc
  • Own configuration of customer payloads (including resource allocation), requirements development/flowdown, interfaces, test plans, and traceability for all documentation of the payload segment.
  • Lead acceptance tests performed on the payload segment.
  • Lead system-level trades, design reviews, and data reviews for the payload segment.
    • Accountable for delivery of SRR, PDR, and CDR, responsible for providing critical inputs to MRR, TRR, and LRR.
  • Create FMEA's to identify vehicle and schedule risks, and execute mitigations.
  • Be accountable for the resolution of any issue, failure, NCR that impacts delivery of your stage, including root cause analysis and issuing of CARs.
  • Own the change control board, deliverable tracking and effort estimates for your stage.
  • Travel 2 days/week to manufacturing facility in Briggs, TX, up to full time during acceptance testing and shipping.
    • Maintain a strong rapport with the integration technicians.
  • Travel 2 weeks every launch to Launch Facility in Vandenberg Space Force Base, CA.
    • Support customer payload integration, and customer facing on-console rehearsals and operations.
    • Support static fire and LV walkdowns.
    • Drive all NCRs that gate static fire or launch to closure.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
  • BS in Aerospace Engineering or related engineering discipline required.
  • 5+ years of focused hands-on experience (or 3+ years with a graduate degree) in an interdisciplinary project management or execution role on rocket stages and/or launch systems. Equivalent work may be considered.
  • Exceptional comprehension of first principles in the following engineering disciplines; mechanical, structural dynamics, materials, electrical, mechatronics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, orbital mechanics, controls, and propulsion.
  • Strong working knowledge of fabrication and assembly methodologies, production management tools, and quality control processes.
  • Experience in CAD, scripting languages, and process automation,
  • Exceptional public speaking, technical writing and presentation skills

Desired
  • MS or PhD in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical field.
  • Strong working knowledge of ASME, MIL, ASTM, and/or NASA Standards, as well as Systems Engineering best practices - able to adapt processes to meet the needs of the team.
  • Experience tailoring the SMC, AFSPCM equivalent range documents.
  • Experienced on Agile Project Management using Atlassian tools (JIRA, confluence, bitbucket).
  • Certified Scrum Master.
  • PMP or equivalent project management experience.
