POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs a variety of routine and complex public safety work in the performance of sheriff patrol, investigation, traffic regulation, and related law enforcement activities.

SUPERVISION:

Provided – May serve as first line supervisor to new hires in the field training process

Received – General and Direct Supervision

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Works a rotating, uniformed shift in the performance of security patrols, traffic control, investigation, and first aid at accidents, detention investigation and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct, serves civil process papers, transports prisoners, responds to county fires, executes warrants including search and arrest, assists other agencies, make extraditions as requested, assist in search and rescue operations, serves all writs and orders of the courts.
  • Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.
  • Maintains normal availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent.
  • Carries out duties in conformance with Federal laws, State laws, and County ordinances.
  • Patrols County roads, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law, control vehicular traffic, prevent or detect and investigate misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies and other law violations' and to otherwise serve and protect.
  • Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. Takes appropriate law enforcement action.
  • Interviews and Interrogates; suspects, witnesses, victims and drivers. Preserves evidence, Arrests violators, investigates and renders assistance at scene of vehicular accidents. Coordinates ambulances, fire and other law enforcement vehicles. Takes

measurements and draws diagrams of scene, conducts follow-up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shifts, develops leads and tips, searches crime

scenes, analyzes and evaluates evidence, and arrests offenders, prepares cases for prosecution, and testifies in court proceedings.

  • Prepares a variety of reports such as; officer's activities, reports of investigation, along with the proper completion of current and utilized forms.
  • Undertakes community-oriented police work, and assists citizens with such matters as locked or stalled vehicles, crime prevention, traffic safety, etc.
  • Participates in investigating criminal law violations occurring within the County limits, obtaining evidences and compiling information regarding these crimes, preparing cases for filing of charges, testifying in court, and related activities.
  • Conducts patrol activities including directing traffic, investigation of reported or observed violations of law, and conducting patrol activities.
  • Performs Court Room and Courthouse Security as needed by maintaining general security throughout the Courthouse, patrolling outside the building to check the building, parking lots, and the public as they come and go from the facility, screening of visitors using an Magnetometer, hand held wand, and physical examination of hand-carried items and persons as needed.
  • Coordinates activities with other officers or other County departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the County Attorney, Court Administrator, and District Prosecutor's Office regarding cases, policies and procedures, as needed and assigned.
  • Maintains contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general information about Department activities.
  • Maintains departmental equipment, supplies and facilities.
  • Maintains contact with general public, court officials, and other County officials in the performance of police operating activities.
  • Assists with Jail duties at times.
  • Performs all other appropriate duties and tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Must complete the State Basic Training Academy or equivalent.
  • Must be 21 years or older at the time of employment.
  • Must be able to communicate in English, both written and orally.
  • Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Some knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Some skill in operating the tools and equipment listed below.
  • Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.
  • Ability to perform job duties requiring good physical condition.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn the County's geography.
  • Ability to meet the special requirements listed below.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 21 years or older at the time of employment.
  • Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any state.
  • No felony convictions and/or serious misdemeanor, disqualifying criminal histories.
  • Ability to meet Department's physical standards.
  • Ability to obtain certification for CPR/First Aid.
  • Basic Law Enforcement Training (or Police Officer Standards and Training) certification or equivalent.
  • Ability to maintain Department proficiency standards in the use of firearms, including any tactical or equipment assigned.
  • Must complete ICS 100 and ICS 700 within the first year of employment.
  • May have to cover shifts or be on call in emergency situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

STRENGTH

HEAVY - Exert up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

MOVEMENT

CLIMBING - Ascending or descending using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.

BALANCING - Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces; or maintaining body equilibrium when performing feats of agility.

STOOPING - Bending body downward and forward. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

STANDING – Particularly for sustained periods of time.

WALKING - Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

WALKING ON UNEVEN TERRAIN - Walking outdoors or in construction areas; surfaces are not paved or smooth.

KNEELING - Bending legs at knees to come to rest on knee or knees.

CROUCHING - Bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.

REACHING - Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

CRAWLING - Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

HANDLING - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands. Fingers are involved only to the extent that they are an extension of the hand.

AUDITORY

TALKING - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to clients or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

HEARING - Perceiving the nature of sounds. Used for those activities which require ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sounds, such as when making fine adjustments on running engines.

VISION

NEAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Use this factor when special and minute accuracy is demanded.

FAR ACUITY - Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Use this factor when visual efficiency in terms of far acuity is required in day and night/dark conditions.

DEPTH PERCEPTION - Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.

ADJUSTMENT - Correction of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. Use this factor when requiring near point work at varying distances.

COLOR VISION - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

FIELD OF VISION - Observing an area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given point. Use this factor when job performance requires seeing a large area while keeping the eyes fixed.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL SURROUNDINGS – EXPOSURE

EXPOSURE TO WEATHER - Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.

EXTREME COLD - Exposure to non-weather-related cold temperatures.

EXTREME HEAT - Exposure to non-weather-related hot temperatures.

WET AND/OR HUMID - Contact with water or other liquids; or exposure to non-weather-related humid conditions.

NOISE - Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss.
