Service Description
About the MSK Volunteer Department
Our mission is to deliver personalized service, care, assistance, and support to patients, caregivers, and staff. Your role as a volunteer is to provide more than just your time and energy - it's also to offer support, courage, solace, and joy to our patients, their loved ones, and our staff, in your own unique way.
Qualifications
  • Must commit to a weekly 3-hour shift for a minimum of 6 months. Volunteers are expected to be reliable in attending their scheduled shifts. Must meet minimum age requirement specified for assignment.
  • If a former or current MSK patient, must be out of active treatment for at least one year.
  • Reliable, excellent interpersonal skills, compassionate, and proactive.

Onboarding Requirements
  • If selected, complete a virtual interview. The selection process is based on the needs of the specific assignment and applicant qualifications.
  • Reference check
  • Background check & drug screen (18 years and older)
  • Medical clearance. COVID-19 & flu vaccine required for volunteers, no exceptions.
  • If the above requirements are pending for more than 30 days the application may be rejected.

*Please note the volunteer department does not oversee internships, educational programs, or shadowing opportunities. The below opportunities are the only open assignments at this time.
Manhattan Opportunities
Assignment: M16 Nursing Support
Seeking volunteers that are available for a weekly 4-hour shift. Shifts vary from 9am - 5pm, 7 days per week.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and comfortable around patients experiencing end of life care.
  • Greet patients, round to patient rooms, support clinical staff.
  • Deliver flowers, water, blankets and other non-clinical items to patients.
  • Assist with patient discharges, wheelchair transport, and prep rooms for admission.

Assignment: M15 Nursing Support
  • Seeking volunteers that are available for a weekly 3-hour shift, M-F from 12pm - 3pm.
  • Must be at least 16 years old, tech-savvy, and comfortable around dogs.
  • Round to patient rooms and deliver non-clinical items (blankets, slippers, water, etc).
  • Assist patients in setting up discharge goals on mobile devices.
  • Survey patients who want to participate in daily therapy dog walking exercises around the unit. Escalate participant list to Nursing Staff.

Vaccination for COVID-19 and Influenza (flu) is mandatory for all MSK staff. Staff are considered fully vaccinated upon completion of a primary vaccination series for COVID-19 (i.e., one dose of a single dose vaccine or a final dose of a multi-dose vaccine series). Exceptions from the COVID-19 and Influenza (flu) vaccine requirements are permitted for those who request and receive an approved medical, religious, or fully remote exemption. Requests for exemption can take up to two weeks to review. Vaccination or an approved exemption is required to start work.
