ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Responsible for assuring correct accessioning and numbering of all surgical specimens.
2. Identifies specimens (and abnormalities) and determines appropriate sectioning technique under the general direction of a pathologist.
3. Communicates and collaborates with surgical/operating room staff.
4. Evaluates specimens and dictates gross descriptions according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
5. Performs the technical preparations of intraoperative consultations (frozen sections, touch preps, gross examinations).
6. Takes photos of all pertinent specimens.
7. Maintains grossing area including making sure the station is well stocked with appropriate supplies and instruments.
8. Maintains departmental supplies and equipment. Fills out purchase orders for needed gross room supplies.
9. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures.
10. Complies with all Federal and State Inspection Agency’s protocols.
11. Consults with pathologists about complex, unusual or difficult specimens.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for high complexity testing.
Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc).
