Patent Attorney / Patent Agent

THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced Patent Attorney or agent to work with us on an as-needed basis to assist with patent drafting, filing, and related tasks. This is an overflow position with the potential to grow into a consistent or full-time position.

Our clients are diverse and file patents on various technologies, so the right candidate needs to be great at picking up new technologies (including software, electrical, electro-mechanical, electro-chemical, and consumer product goods) and even better at client communications to ensure clients have confidence in our abilities to deliver.

The ideal candidate is a highly organized, detail-oriented person that enjoys working in a friendly, small team environment. The candidate takes initiative and is accountable to deliver work product ahead of deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must be:

• Proficient with typical computer programs
• A fast learner, confident in abilities and limitations

If your resume does not clearly indicate 3+ years of patent experience, please include a brief cover letter to explain any apparent gaps in qualifications. All candidates are subject to typical new candidate screening prior to commencement of any engagement.

REQUIRED SKILLS

All candidates must be proficient with the following:

• Patent preparation, filing, and prosecution
• Expertise in USPTO online platforms
• Patent searching and analysis for patentability, infringement, validity, etc.
• Ability to learn new software programs and automation tools
• Accuracy in following standard procedures
• Ability to create and document standard procedures

Preferred candidates will also be familiar with (or be able to quickly learn) the following:

• Microsoft Teams (our team communication tools)
• Monday.com (our project management automation tools)
• Microsoft Visio (PLEASE NOTE: We strongly prefer our attorneys help draft simple drawings using Microsoft Visio, because we find the quality of applications increases when attorneys have more involvement in the drawing process. However, it's also possible for us to coordinate with a drafter for more complex drawings, as needed.)
• Micro Office and other similar office software

COMPENSATION AND SCHEDULE

This is a contracted position with project-based compensation for most matters, although some matters are compensated hourly.

The average hourly rate listed for this position is a broad range. Please indicate in a cover letter or initial message what hourly rate you require within this range. We expect someone with a lower rate to have more administrative support and peer guidance, while someone at the higher rate to require less administrative support and be able to offer more peer guidance than they require).

Work can be completed remotely and/or on a flexible schedule.

Our team is very collaborative with each other and with our clients. We require everyone on our team to be available for a weekly 15-minute team huddle and at least one other 15-minute coordination meeting for your specific discipline.
