Job Description
The Huntington Learning Center of Fairfax has partnered with SOME and Washington DC public schools to provide reading and math tutoring to students going into grades 4-8. This program is being funded by a grant to provide HIT (High Impact Tutoring) to students in an effort to recover from learning loss during the pandemic. Teachers will use proven, individualized academic programs working with students in up to a 4:1 ratio, with each session lasting for 1.5 hours (90 minutes). The goal of the program is to help students bring their foundational academic skills up to grade level. SOME locations where tutoring is being offered are in Northwest and Southeast DC. The primary need right now is in SE DC.
We have a 10-week math program starting next week, on Tuesday November 7th. We need teachers who are available to work with students from 5:30-7:00 PM at our SOME locations on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. This will be an ongoing part-time position, with short breaks of 2-4 weeks between 10-week programs that alternate between reading and math instruction.
Teachers are expected to engage and interact with their students; we are looking for individuals in the community who see the importance of reading and math skills and are passionate about helping our students become better students. We know that this will make our students more confident and provide the foundation they will need to be successful in all of their classes moving forward. We have a proven, individualized academic program for every student based on an academic evaluation. There is no prep, planning or looking for curriculum. You will be paid for simply teaching the assigned program to your assigned students, each at their own pace. The program director will also make adjustments to each program based on your input. Teachers give their availability on a monthly basis, but always have the option to adjust their availability as needed.
We also offer sessions from 4:00-5:30 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays at Friendship SE Elementary/Middle School. We are also hiring teachers for this location, as secondary teachers to fill in when the primary Friendship staff teachers are unavailable (substitutes).
