Form of workPerform essential law enforcement and community service functions to help the department meet its mission to protect life and property, to provide the campus community with a peaceful and safe environment conducive to pursing and providing varied levels of education. This is a part-time position consisting of required evening and weekend hours.
- Attend Academy training and complete POST certification within 12 months of hire (for recruits).
- Enforce state laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Work as a Patrol Officer in law enforcement assignments.
- Handle special event staffing assignments.
- Participate in designated minimum required Patrol shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Conduct criminal and administrative investigations as assigned.
- Assist in the judicial process by providing testimony.
- Represent USUPD at community service and public relations activities.
- Build trust by getting personally acquainted with community members.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to all service calls.
- Prepare quality reports when necessary.
- Ensure proper investigation, gathering, reporting, and preservation of evidence for crimes.
- Promote general safety through vehicle, foot, and bicycle patrol.
- Direct traffic, enforce traffic laws, issue citations, and make arrests in line with state law.
- Foster good relations with other law enforcement agencies through information exchange and assistance.
- Maintain a thorough knowledge of laws, University policies, USUPD policies, and police operations.
- Meet or exceed annual UT POST law enforcement training hours.
- Perform other assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 21 years of age at the time of appointment as a certified peace officer.
- Must have a Utah driver's license or be able to obtain one within a month of the start date.
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Shall not have been convicted of a felony or any crime involving moral turpitude.
- Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
- Must be in excellent physical condition.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous law enforcement experience with successful completion of Field Training.
- Currently Utah POST Certified.
- Experience in Policing in a Higher Educational setting.
- Personal knowledge of and experience with the USU Community.
- Associates Degree or higher in a closely related field of study.
- Current applicable law enforcement certifications, e.g., radar and Intoxilyzer, etc.

Commensurate with experience
The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting (50 pounds) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
