Position Summary

The Writing Center tutors will be responsible for conducting tutoring sessions with students (clients) who visit The Writing Center by assessing their needs and assisting the clients with their writing concerns. Tutors will also assist The Writing Center Coordinator with the day-to-day operations of The Writing Center including providing assistance with preparing various reports.
SALARY: $10.60 per hour, not to exceed 19 hours per week.Associate degree (or the equivalent 60 semester hours) from an accredited institution earns $15.60 per hour, not to exceed 19 hours per week.

Part-time positions are posted based on the possible availability of a future assignment which are sporadic and may not occur. Available positions are contingent upon enrollment and instructional needs of the College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Tutor. Participate in tutor training sessions and evaluate the progress of the students in the tutoring setting.

  • Establish contact and arrange tutoring sessions.
  • Assess student needs and guide him/her at a level the student can understand.
  • Organize tutoring sessions in ways that maximize student learning.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide feedback promptly to promote maximum learning.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: College Expectations. Dependability, attendance, punctuality, and a commitment to do the job right are essential at all times.
  • Reports to work on time, at appropriate workstation or department during all departmental/position scheduled work days and during all departmental/position scheduled work hours.
  • Understands that failure to report for work and/or reporting late without prior approval are unacceptable practices and will result in disciplinary action.
  • Performs a productive full day's work.
  • Ensures that service to students and the general public is top priority.
  • Demonstrates a considerate, friendly, respectful and constructive attitude toward fellow employees and students.
  • Adheres to all College and System policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Completion of English 101 (or its equivalent) with a minimum grade of B is required.
  • Instructor recommendation written by student's English 101 or 102 instructor is required.


Available positions are contingent upon enrollment and the instructional needs of the College.
Applicants must travel at their own expense for interviews that are conducted in person.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Up to 10 days a year of professional development leave with pay may be granted by the President.

Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. For more information visit The Retirement Systems of Alabama. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama.

Health Insurance
PEEHIP, established in 1983, provides health insurance benefits for active and retired education employees and is governed by the PEEHIP Board of Control. The wellness premium applies only to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Hospital Medical Group #14000 plan for non-Medicare eligible active and retired members, non-Medicare-eligible members on LOA or COBRA, and non-Medicare-eligible spouses on active or retired contracts. If desired, the employee may elect four options rather than health insurance options to include hospital indemnity, cancer, dental, and vision.

Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.
Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:
  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
Note: Employee is vested after 10 years in Retirement System. Additional information regarding retirement may be obtained from the Retirement System Web site at www.rsa.al.gov.
