Salary/Position Classification

Purpose of Position

Each faculty member is responsible for supporting the teaching missions of the department as designated in collaboration with the department chair. He/She may engage in scholarship and service as assigned by the chair. He/She is responsible for providing effective learning experiences for students with diverse interests, abilities, and expectations. Each faculty member is expected to earn a doctoral degree to support the knowledge and growth of the profession within five years of appointment. In addition, faculty are expected to be involved in activities that support individuals and or groups in the institution, University System, professional associations, or external communities at the local, state, regional, national, or international levels. He/She is evaluated annually by the department chairperson.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Prepare and instruct specific course content as assigned by the department chair each academic year. This includes developing assignments, course materials and handouts under direction of the assigned course director. Faculty are also responsible for course grading and providing feedback to students.
  • Refer discipline concerns to assigned course director and department chair. Maintain office/discipline/division records as required by the Department, SMHS and University.
  • Conduct all classes in accordance with an established and current course syllabus and approved textbook (and/or related instructional material). Participate in textbook adoption and review as requested by the assigned course director.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, engaging in professional development activities, and networking with colleagues.
  • Document engagement in life-long learning in the areas including (but not limited to) higher education, student-centered learning, Occupational Therapy best practice, and teaching/learning technology. Maintain a faculty development plan (Form F) demonstrating progress on effectiveness of teaching.
  • Participate in scheduled faculty mentoring activities each semester. Maintain regular documented contact with assigned mentor.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled department meetings as requested by department chair.
  • Use the appropriate policies and procedures to resolve and document student complaints, concerns, and problems.
  • Faculty are expected to be active in and support national and state professional/academic organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Department Chairperson, Dean, or University Administrators.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess appropriate documented academic and experiential qualifications and backgrounds necessary to meet curriculum design, content delivery, program evaluation and the mission of the University/OT Department.
  • Must obtain and hold appropriate state licensure for professional practice.
  • Maintain a high level of professional ethics as outlined by AOTA and the University.
  • Ensure knowledge of and compliance with ADA requirements within classes assigned.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and written communication skills.

Minimum Requirements

  • Earned Masters of Occupational Therapy
  • Experience in Adult Mental Functions and Mental Health
  • Experience in Geriatric Mental Functions including dementia
  • Be able to be licensed in the state of North Dakota and Wyoming
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check
