Description
Performs varied work in the effective operation of library services to the public, primarily putting returned books and other items in their proper places on the shelves. They are also responsible for keeping items in the right order, and may at times check items back in.
Occasionally assists the Programs staff in preparing for and/or hosting library events.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the direct supervision of a Library Information Specialist or the Library Services Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provides extraordinary customer service to the public.
Discharges library materials; Shelves materials maintaining neatness and orderliness; Maintains the neat and orderly appearance of the library.
Answers basic directional questions from the public; Responds to inquiries and resolves issues and concerns; Communicates issues and concerns to supervisor.
Performs duties in strict compliance with appropriate safety and security standards; Ensures applicable safety and health rules and regulations are followed.
Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times and streamline work processes.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Answers phones, runs errands and acquires supplies as needed.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Working on (or completed) a High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Previous experience is not required, although preference may be given to people who have done work in the library as a volunteer.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to alphabetize and put things in numerical order. Much of a page's job typically will include putting books and other items back where they belong, called "shelving," or making sure that items on the shelf are in the correct order, "shelf reading.".
- A high level of attention to detail.
- People skills – ability to work effectively with others and enjoy it.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Special Requirements
Incumbents in this position are sometimes required to work varied shifts including evenings and weekends.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Personal computers, Integrated Library Systems, printers, phones, general office equipment.
Part time employees will accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every (30) thirty hours worked. No other benefits will be offered to Part Time employees
