Description
Under the supervision of the Animal Control Director is charged with the responsibility for maintaining a clean and safe environment for animals housed at the animal shelter, Responsible for providing kennel cleaning and feeding, daily exercise, minor medical attention and grooming to animals housed at the shelter.
Examples of Duties
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties, which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
  1. Cleans and disinfects all areas of the shelter including dog kennels and cat areas.
  2. Feeds and waters all animals on a regular basis.
  3. Maintains appropriate identification for each animal housed at the shelter.
  4. Provides guidance and instructions to volunteers, community service workers, and trustees assisting in kennel cleaning, exercising or other tasks.
  5. Loads/unloads animals from vehicles, cages, kennels and other areas for transport and/or relocation.
  6. Assists in maintaining the Animal Shelter building and grounds to include general custodial cleaning, outdoor tasks and upkeep.
  7. Assists with animal intake - including vaccinations, weighing, de-worming, clean up and other tasks.
  8. Assists the Director with behavior testing of animals and monitors animals for behavioral changes
  9. Assists the public by answering questions about animals and retrieving dogs from kennels.
  10. Baths and grooms animals as needed to maintain proper health and appearance.
  11. Assists in office jobs pertaining to records upkeep and other directed activities.
  12. Performs other duties as directed.

Typical Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and some prior experience caring in custodial maintenance, preferably with animals.
  • The county, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience.
  • Michigan Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Ability to learn the principles and practices of shelter kennel care and cleanliness.
  • Ability to follow sanitary procedures and practices, observing and caring for animals and basic office procedures.
  • Skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with county employees, contractors to the county, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, and the public.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment, including some computer usage and the ability to learn applicable aspects of software programs used by the operation.
  • Ability to attend to duties scheduled at times other than normal business hours.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in the office and primarily works in the kennel area. While in the office, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and by telephone, read regular and small print, and view data on a computer keyboard.
While performing the kennel-related duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to sit, stand, walk, run and move freely at any time. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects of up to 50 pounds without assistance and may be required to restrain and/or control aggressive animals. The noise level in the work environment may be quiet to very loud. Though applicable safety procedures are documented and utilized, the incumbent may be exposed to animal bites and unsanitary or unhygienic materials, animals and situations in the course of performing required duties.

1 Floating holiday: may be used anytime during the calendar year.
A part-time employee must be regularly scheduled to work on the recognized holiday to be eligible for pro-rated holiday pay.
Personal Time
Every January, all regular full-time and regular part-time employees (on a pro-rated basis) will be credited with personal hours. Employees that work 40 hours per week will be credited with 56 personal leave hours. There is no accumulation, carry over, or payout of personal leave hours.
Vacation Time
Each regular full-time and regular part-time employee shall earn, on a pro-rated basis, vacation time as follows:
From start date up to and including 5 years of service 10 Days
From 6 years and up to and including 10 years of service 15 Days
From 11 years of service and up 20 Days
Vacation time will be credited to the employee's bank on a bi-weekly basis. Employees can only have up to their base vacation accrued in their vacation bank at any one time and they may not use more than what is currently in their vacation bank.
