Part-Time Firefighter

Incumbent serves as Part-Time Firefighter for Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, responsible for fire suppression, vehicle and fire station maintenance, hazardous material response, rescue operations and emergency medical services.
I. DUTIES:
Responds to various alarms and carries/sets up appropriate equipment at emergency scenes.
Searches for and rescues victims from dangerous situations, stabilizes injured individuals by providing appropriate patient care according to level of training.
Suppresses fires, including climbing ladders, crawling/walking on roofs and floors, operating equipment to open holes and windows to supply adequate ventilation, focusing streams of water and/ or chemicals toward fires, and moving into fire areas while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Cleans and removes debris from scene and monitors site for recurrence of fire.
Drives emergency vehicles to/from incidents as assigned.
Responds to reports of hazardous materials, including identifying and confining hazardous materials to minimize or prevent damage and evacuating persons from hazardous areas as needed.
Monitors and performs general maintenance on equipment and vehicles, including cleaning/ washing, checking fluids and tire pressure, and filling air tanks and checking regulators. Reports equipment repair needs to supervisor as required.
Periodically assists with equipment inventories and related reports as assigned.
Maintains cleanliness/appearance of buildings/grounds/ related equipment, including cleaning/sanitizing restrooms, replenishing supplies, sweeping floors, dusting offices, picking up litter, and emptying trash containers, painting/patching walls, caulking windows, unclogging toilets, changing light bulbs, washing/waxing/cleaning vehicles, checking/maintaining fluid levels, mowing/trimming grass or shrubs/flowers, removing fallen tree limbs, shoveling/sweeping/blowing snow, spreading salt on walkways, pulling weeds, watering plants, and raking leaves.
Works irregular and/or extended hours as assigned.
Performs related duties as assigned.
II. JOB REQUIREMENTS / REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or GED, Firefighter I/II, Minimum First Responder. Basic EMT or National EMT Certified preferred. CPAT/SCBA Certified/Cleared.
Ability to meet all medical physicals and certifications, and ability to physically be able to DON and DOF and operate self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Ability to meet all department hiring, retention and promotion requirements, including not posing a direct threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the work place.
Working knowledge of fire service hydraulics and ability to properly operate and maintain department vehicles, equipment, hand and power tools, including, but not limited to, protective clothing, axes, ladders, aerial devices, self- contained breathing apparatus, generators, pressure fans, power saws, defibrillator, intravenous equipment, oxygen, and hoses.
Working knowledge of radio frequencies, codes, procedures and limitations, and ability to speak clearly and distinctly, and hear and be heard and understood in person, by radio and by telephone.
Working knowledge of geographical areas, street names and landmarks within designated fire district, and ability to read and interpret related maps.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other emergency personnel and victims, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
Ability to recognize signs and symptoms of some communicable diseases and dangers of bloodborne pathogens and ability to protect oneself from contamination by utilizing universal health precautions and avoiding high risk environments.
Ability to understand and follow all written and oral orders from supervisor and superior officers as required.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to department and city policy. This does not prohibit legally-protected speech and conduct.
Ability to maintain personal composure and tact during difficult situations.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including but not limited to attendance, safety, and apply OSHA safety regulations applicable to work performed, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Possession of a valid Indiana Driver’s License and demonstrated safe driving record.
III. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs moderately complex, relatively standardized duties according to standard department operating procedures, making independent decisions and taking authoritative action in response to situational demands.
Incumbent's work is periodically reviewed in progress for compliance with department policies and procedures. Errors in emergency duties could result in endangerment to self and/or others.
Incumbent reports directly to the Officer in charge.
IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including, but not limited to, sitting and/or standing/walking for long periods, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, climbing stairs and ladders, reaching, bending, handling/grasping/fingering objects, and hearing sounds/communication.
V. WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is identified as having occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Exposure to smoke, toxic chemicals, noxious gases/fumes, extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dangerous heights, trenches, manholes/confined spaces, bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials, communicable diseases exposures, and violent/distraught individuals.
Universal health/safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid contamination and/or injury to self and others.
