About the York County SPCA:

The York County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is a charitable organization dedicated to finding loving permanent homes for stray and displaced animals, controlling the pet population growth rates, investigating, and prosecuting animal cruelty offenders, and educating the public about animal wellness and safety.


Position Overview:

The Animal Care Technician (ACT) plays a critical role in caring for many of the animals at the York County SPCA. In addition to providing animal enrichment, the ACT is responsible for the general care and maintenance of shelter animals including feeding, cleaning, disinfecting, grooming, vaccinating, and medicating shelter animals. ACTs become well acquainted with shelter animals and provide detailed animal descriptions to help facilitate adoptions.


We are looking for 1 Part Time ACT to work the following schedule:

Friday, Saturday, Sunday 8am - 4:30pm

Additional hours are sometimes available.


Essential Functions:

  • Performs basic animal husbandry tasks such as cage cleaning, feeding, walking, and other Animal Care activities for shelter cats, dogs, small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice, hamsters, ferrets), and exotic animals; primarily this position involves caring for cats and small animals
  • Conducts bathing, dipping, oral and topical medication administration
  • Cleans, sanitizes, organizes, and restocks the facility
  • Provides quality care to animals in medical quarantine
  • Works with the ACT Manager and Lead ACTs to take animal photographs and provide individualized animal characteristics descriptions to help promote adoptions
  • Observes and reports medical and behavioral issues to the ACT Manager
  • Moves animals onto the adoption floor
  • Restrains animals for medical procedures such as venipuncture and vaccine administration
  • Provides socialization and enrichment
  • Performs essential animal record keeping functions on our shelter software - Shelterluv

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required

Preferred:

  • 1-2 Year experience handling animals

Skills and Abilities:

  • Possesses a strong passion for the York County SPCA’s mission
  • Effective communication with customers, volunteers, and staff
  • Demonstrated track record with multitasking with positive results
  • Attentive to the needs of each animal
  • Has excellent organization skills and is detail-oriented; adapts to changes in the workplace
  • Works efficiently without supervision, and uses talents to creatively further the mission of the York County SPCA
  • Works effectively as part of a team
  • Has demonstrated success in creating and promoting a diverse, inclusive, and respectful workplace environment.

Working Conditions and Expectations:

  • Weekend and some holiday shifts required
  • Some fundraising and event attendance may be required
  • Comfortable with regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste, and moderate noise levels.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear, stoop, bend, squat, kneel, grasp, grip, put fingers together firmly and reach above and below shoulder level and lift, push or pull 40 pounds for situations of moving and lifting materials or supplies, repetitively use hands to operate computers; flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist. In 2022…

  • We took in 2,354 animals. Most were strays or owner-surrendered animals.
  • We investigated and prosecuted over 200 cases of animal neglect or abuse.
  • We adopted out over 1,560 animals. This includes dogs, cats, birds, chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, and rabbits.
  • Our high volume, low-cost clinic performed 10,021 spay/neuter surgeries. Our veterinary staff performed another 1,000+ spay/neuter surgeries, which means the York County SPCA performed over 11,200 spay/neuter surgeries!
