Job Description:

If this sounds like you, come join our team at Tumalo State Park as a Park Ranger 1 and support one of Oregon's greatest resources - State Parks! Nestled in the heart of sunny central Oregon, Tumalo rests along Oregon's spectacular Deschutes River four miles north of Bend. Its location makes it an ideal base camp for any outdoor activity you could dream of: lush green golf courses, clear blue-ribbon trout steams, pristine alpine lakes, and miles of scenic hiking and mountain bike trails

What you will do:

Perform, conduct and oversee a variety of tasks in order to protect, maintain, operate and repair state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems by using skills in building trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and landscape maintenance, as well as specialized program skills (e.g.: resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, park rule enforcement, etc.) related to the maintenance and operations of OPRD programs, properties within the Tumalo Management Unit.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Park Ranger 1: Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping). OR

    An Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation
    such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

    NOTE: A higher level degree may substitute for the Associate's degree. There is no substitute for the 6 months experience.


Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
  • You must have a valid driver's license at the time of hire and throughout employment

  • Skill and knowledge of basic park resource and facility operations and maintenance and/or resource interpretation.
  • Skill in performing basic janitorial, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and grounds-keeping tasks.
  • Skill in the safe use of tools, material and equipment associated with landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance
  • Skill in listening to what people say and asking appropriate questions to obtain needed information or resolve visitor complaints and conflicts.
  • Skill in communicating work procedures and goals to employees, hosts, volunteers from the public and youth groups to accomplish varied tasks and achieve the goals.
  • Skill in working on a small team to provide excellent customer service to the public and other members of the team.
