ParaProfessionals must meet one of the following qualifications:

Have 32 college credits or
Have a college degree or
Pass the ParaPro Assessment with a score of 460 or higher.

ParaPro Praxis testing dates are offered at the school district throughout the year to West Ada ParaProfessional applicants. Test should be passed within 90 days of hire. Once the Praxis test is passed, reimbursement of the cost of the test is available through the district.

PURPOSE
Supervises operation of and provides the services of an elementary school library; presents information to students according to district library curriculum; orders, catalogs and processes materials; maintains library catalog and circulation records; performs related work as required.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary function of an employee in this class is to direct the operation of and provide the services of an elementary school library, including presenting information to students about basic library skills and about using print and electronic resources, developing and maintaining a balanced resource collection and an accurate database of catalog and circulation records, facilitating interlibrary loan transactions, and providing support and assist the principal in supervising the Library Assistant/Elementary position and giving direction to volunteers. The employee is supervised by the building principal. The primary duties of the position are performed in a library/classroom environment. Employees must take the required classes or document skill development with comparable checklist within the first three years of employment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Assists students and staff in locating books, web-based database resources, internet resources, and research materials:
  • Instructs and supervised students in basic library functions and skill, including information and communication technology skills, using our web-based library catalog, care of a book, parts of a book, library location skills, listening skills, story elements;
  • Prepares and follows lesson plans according to District K-5 library instruction curriculum; monitors student progress in monitoring library and information skills;
  • Checks books, materials and audio/visual equipment in and out, and reshelf library resources; facilitates interlibrary loan transactions
  • Maintains accurate database of MARC and copy records;
  • Works with teachers and staff to determine library resource needs; evaluated, selects, and orders library materials; periodically evaluated and weeds collection;
  • Inventories and performs minor maintenance on books, audio/visual equipment, and other library materials;
  • Maintains the library in a neat and orderly manner;
  • Develops bulletin boards, exhibits, and related library displays;
  • Supervises special library events (book fairs);
  • Trains and supervises subordinate aides, student assistants, and volunteers;
  • Collects fines on overdue, lost, and damaged materials;
  • Preforms all work duties and activities in accordance with District Policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • May perform teacher assistant, lunchroom, playground, bus, and other monitoring duties as assigned;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Basic library functions, operations, and objectives, classroom management;
  • Operation and maintenance of standard office equipment including computers, software applications, computer peripherals and common audio/visual equipment (e.g. DVD player, Digital camera);
  • Computer use, including email, Internet, word processing, spreadsheets and file management;

Ability to:
  • Follow oral and written instructions and observe District policies and procedures;
  • Operate and maintain an elementary school library;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, teachers and staff members, and other district personnel;
  • Implement lesson plans based on district library curriculum, present information to students, and manage a classroom;
  • Manage and implement web-based library cataloging, circulation, and search database systems; electronic research resources, and web-based utilities.
  • Operate specialized library and school AV equipment (e.g. projectors, scanners, clickers, electronic whiteboards, document cameras, and wireless library scanners)
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handing interruptions, and returning to and completing tasks in a timely manner;
  • Preform time management and scheduling functions, meet deadlines, and set task priorities;
  • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required and
  • Library, classroom, computer, or other instructional experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person, and to hear sounds within the normal range of conversation;
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and comprehend, review, and prepare a variety of written and text documents and materials;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer, and specialized library and AV equipment;
  • Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to stand or sit for long periods of time, bend and stoop repeatedly, lift at least 30 pounds and maneuver book carts, and work in a library and classroom environment.
