Position Title: Summer Crew Member, Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps
Location: Pennsylvania, Sites Vary
Position Type: Full Time - 6 Week Seasonal
POSITION DETAILS:
2023 Crew Locations: Altoona, Allentown, Bradford, Chambersburg, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Norristown, Pittsburgh, Reading, Ridgway, Renovo, Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport, Wellsboro, York, American SIgn Language Inclusion (state-wide recruitment)
Position Dates: July 1st – August 9th, 2024
Weekly Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:30am - 3:30pm
- Local Crews meet daily at a centralized location in their program city. Crews will then travel out to the worksites together in SCA vehicles. Some drives can be up to 1.5hrs.
Compensation: $15.00/hr, environmental education and career-exploration opportunities
- This is a field based position. Efforts will be made to accommodate safe and/or indoor work during short periods of inclement weather but crew members may be called-off during periods of extreme weather and therefore, 37.5 hours per week is not guaranteed in the event of inclement weather events.
Qualifications
- Ages 15-18 at the start of the program
- Able to conduct manual work in all outdoor conditions. Including the ability to hike up to 4 miles per day
- Able to work collaboratively on a small team
- An interest in conservation careers, trade skills, or a related field in highly encouraged
- Must be able to model safe and professional behavior at all times
- Must have housing in or near the program city.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from crew meeting location
- Must be a resident of Pennsylvania
JOB FUNCTIONS
CONSERVATION PROJECTS MAY INCLUDE:
- Trail maintenance and construction including: implementing water management techniques, brushing, blazing, reroutes,
- Habitat Restoration including: invasive species identification and treatments, tree Planting, installing Riparian Buffers
- Facility maintenance projects including: painting, staining, and basic carpentry
- Constructions projects such as: bridges, stairs, picnic tables, and pavilions
- Fencing and Boundary Line Maintenance
- Leave No Trace overnight camping experiences in Allegheny National Forest
- Professional networking – work alongside a variety of DCNR park staff and learn about different state positions, building rapport with personnel throughout the season
- Expand conservation knowledge by participating in Environmental Education Opportunities
- Gain hands-on work experience and learn about green career path opportunities
