MHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our ship yard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.
JOB SUMMARY: Assembles, repairs, and fabricates metal parts by operating mechanical equipment. Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units. Uses blueprints and design sketches to ensure proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product. Provides leadership to less skilled Outside Machine Shop personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Analyzes job from start to finish ensuring proper and safe work methods used.
- Reads and interprets work specifications, blue prints, technical manuals and design sketches to ensure the proper dimensions and tolerance levels of the finished product.
- Assembles, repairs, and fabricates metal parts by operating mechanical equipment such as hand tools, calipers, micrometers, lathes, boring mill, planer, shaper, slotter, and milling machine.
- Assembles parts into sub-units or complete units.
- May install ship machinery such as propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gears.
- Tests and inspects installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
- Assists, guides, and demonstrates good marine practices.
- Identifies and troubleshoots mechanical problems and reports to supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have at least three years of Outside Machinist experience. Diesel exp. highly preferred.
- Must have the ability to carry out written or oral instructions.
- Must be able to operate precision tools, drill press, and grinders.
- Ability to interpret blue prints and design sketches.
- Must be able to work effectively with others.
- Must be steady, reliable worker
