The Outreach Recreation Team Lead will instruct and lead activities in accordance with the prescribed curriculum. You will interact with youth, facilitate activities, and supervise some aspects of outreach programs, providing safe and rewarding opportunities for youth in fun outdoor experiences. Discover the Outdoors is a van-based program that picks up under-resourced participants at various low-income housing apartments or mobile home parks around Bend. DTO explores parks, team building activities, hiking trails, water activities, and staff help kids develop a positive relationship with the outdoors. Each camp will be aimed to engage 10-12 middle-school-aged youth. Team leads are responsible for providing leadership and support to staff for assigned program or shifts.
This position will also be assisting in other outreach programs such as:
• Fun on the Fly: A program on Friday afternoons that brings recreation activities and interactions to various low-income housing units around Bend.
• Adaptive Cycling for the Latino/a Community: This event will occur on Saturdays 3 times this summer. It is a partnership between BPRD, Vámonos Outside, and Oregon Adaptive Sports.
• Community Celebrations: A community event put on by the outreach team with the intent to engage families who typically experience barriers to participation in BPRD spaces.
• Movies in the Park: A series that occurs each Friday starting in August. Recreation staff provide games and activities for the hours prior to the movie start time.
• Other partnered outreach opportunities as they arise.
A day in the life:
• Supervises assigned program and/or shift ensuring program standards are maintained.
• Provides leadership, expertise and support to assigned staff which may include training, mentoring, directing, and assigning work.
May assist Supervisor in hiring and evaluating staff.
• Assists Supervisor in developing, planning and scheduling programs.
• Gathers and organizes supplies needed for outreach programs.
• Keeps the van clean and fueled up for adventures.
• Oversees facility operations during assigned shifts; opens and closes facility; ensures that health and safety standards are maintained; oversees the operation and care of equipment and supplies, addresses maintenance issues.
• Ensures the inclusion of all participants, adapting activities to meet individual needs and abilities and working with Therapeutic Recreation staff as needed.
• Provides for safety of participants and staff, including implementing risk management practices.
• Oversees the operation and care of equipment, supplies and purchase regular program supplies up to $500.
• Addresses public questions and concerns regarding facilities and programs in a positive and constructive manner.
• Serves as the on-site lead of the Emergency Action Plan, managing response according protocols.
• Maintains required records and reports.
Schedule:
Seasonal position through beginning of September 2024
Schedule may include evenings and weekends.
Discover the Outdoors will start the second week of July and run for 4 consecutive weeks.
Fun on the Fly will operate every Friday from June 28th- Aug 9th
Movies in the Park to take place every Friday in August and the first Friday in September.
Adaptive Cycling: June 22nd, July 27th, and August 17th
Other outreach initiatives and prep time to take place throughout the summer season.
Requirements
What you'll need for success:
Strong Knowledge of:
Behavior management; childhood development and age-appropriate crafts, games, and activities; safety and sanitation guidelines. General knowledge of supervision practices. Experience in introductory outdoor activities.
Skill and Ability to:
Exercise strong initiative and significant independent decision-making; demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, planning and problem-solving skills; communicate effectively in both verbal and written form; supervise and motivate staff; interact with a variety of patrons/participants; handle emergency situations as they arise; actively participate in all activities; establish and maintain positive, respectful and cooperative relationships with all contacts.
What we're looking for:
Education, Experience, and Training:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent; college courses in related field preferred; AND
  2. Two (2) years of experience in area of responsibility and/or performing similar tasks AND
  3. Three (3) years of driving history and valid driver's license preferred but not required.
  4. Bilingual in English and Spanish OR
  5. Any satisfactory combination of experience and training.

LICENSE & CERTIFICATION:
  1. Some positions may require possession of CPR/First Aide certification to be provided through on-the-job training.
  2. Some positions may require possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.

Position Specific Requirement
This position may require reporting to additional sites throughout the workday, typically achieved in a motor vehicle OR other modes of transportation. If choosing a personal vehicle, possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.
If you do not have a driver's license or have an unacceptable driving history, it does not disqualify you from this position, only from driving a vehicle for district business.
Supervision Received:
Works under the supervision of the Outreach Supervisor. Receives regular, weekly supervision and direction.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Exercises direct leadership and supervision over Recreation 1 and 2 positions (excluding hiring and termination decisions, responding to grievances, and compensation) and volunteers.
Working Conditions:
Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors, which may include working in extreme weather conditions. Work schedule is varied but generally requires weekday hours with occasional weekends and holidays. The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time. Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, and kneeling in order to deliver equipment and supplies. Job stress may include dealing with crowds, uncooperative participants, difficult individuals, exposure to illness and periods of continuous demand.
