Interested in making a difference in a community? The City of Garden City is looking for an individual to work part-time (25-29 hours per week) in our Code Enforcement Department. This Department works closely with the Police Department, Building Department, and 21st District Court to enforce the Codes and Ordinances of the City of Garden City. Additionally, this position will be responsible for all Animal Control issues.
Employees will typically work a day shift, but may include some nights and weekends.
Salary starts at $17.50/hour, but may be higher for a candidate with experience in Animal Control operations.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements
Education/Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completion of college-level coursework in law enforcement, building inspection or a field related to the work is highly desirable
- Experience in the enforcement of zoning laws and building codes with a public agency is highly desirable
- Desired Candidates will have at least one year of experience in caring for animals
- Must possess Animal Control Officer certification by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, having completed and submitted 100 hours of training or willing to become certified as an Animal Control Officer within six months of hire.
Job duties include:
- Patrolling assigned areas of the City to identify code violations
- Responding to complaints reported to the City
- Communicating with residents and business owners regarding violations, remedies, and time frames
- Writing tickets for violations
- Maintain detailed documentation
- Attention to detail
- Updating database with the most current information
- Communicating the most recent developments to other employees/departments as needed
- Appearing in Court and testifying when necessary
- Enforces local ordinances, such as leash laws, licensing, vaccinations, quarantining, dangerous dog, and barking dog ordinances
- Patrols assigned area in an assigned vehicle to ensure compliance with local ordinances, Animal Control regulations and responds to routine calls
- Assesses reported or observed violations of Animal Control regulations, makes determinations, and takes required action, such as issuing citations.
- Provides field services including capturing domestic and wild animals, examining injured and ill animals to select treatment disposition, and removing animals from a variety of hazardous situations.
- Investigates complaints regarding violations of city Animal Control ordinances and provides documentation of these investigations.
- Prepares records and reports and enters data into a software system using a computer.
- Gathers evidence on animal care cases, including photographs, video recordings, and other information for presentation in court.
- Maintains legal chain-of-custody for evidentiary materials.
- Testifies in court on cases pertaining to violations of animal regulatory ordinances.
- Uses department issued equipment, operates a variety of communications equipment, and reports equipment damage.
